Hi Longilily, I'm a little confused about the multiple penta drive sizes. Will there be different versions of this tool (sounds like 3), or will one tool accomodate the multiple sizes? Thanks!
Hi We're in the process of deciding on the layout of the tool ! It is Ross's intention to have a universal tool, so all the caps can be undone with the one tool ! There are four types of 'Drive' no1 is a Penta drive (for the earlier caps ) , no2 is a 3mm Hex drive (for the later caps and Katadyn ) , no3 is the 'Slotted' version with the central pin, and no4 a square drive. Hope this helps Cheers
I totally agree with snwcmpr so it is fortunate that Longilily is a fine engineer. I was thinking of the envisaged 4-way multi tool. I would be quite happy with two 'z' tools.
Thanks, but it wasn't really about @Longilily, personally, as much as about a person wanting cheap tools made by a craftsman. (I substituted affordable with cheap). How much do we spend on a stove? Just one stove. I paid almost as much to ship a stove as I paid for my current SRV tool. The craftsman is due his worth. Isn't that in the bible somewhere? (Ok, I am not a bible person, but....) If you want affordable, make it yourself. If you can't, pay the going rate. Ken in NC
Can't please everyone, so make the decision that seems best. Is the labor to make a do-it-all tool cheaper or the same as labor for two tools? Duane
Ken, I gathered that, seemed maybe some hesitation over that. Another tool for the stovie fix it box. Duane
I take exception to certain comments that have been posted here, aimed at me and using emotionally loaded language that I didn't use, nor that I meant. To me having these slurs slung at any member of this community cheapens the whole community. Using emotionally laden terms which were not part of the original posting is a tactic that is usually used when there is little else of substance to complain about. What I meant by my original posting was a reference to other products on the market which amount to a screwdriver bit on a long handle which would cost me almost $75 Cdn landed at my door. Now I admit that product may be constructed precisely out of top quality materials by a top notch craftsman but it's intended use is in soft brass, and probably not necessarily needed. The analogy is "would you buy a Rolls Royce to drive to the corner store once a week to buy a quart of milk?" In case the offending party has no experience in the business world in the marketing end of things, there is a concept called "price point". Deciding on the price point of any marketable object or service demands first of all knowing the demographic of your customer base. Once you have determined that, then you use many different methods and data to determine how much you can charge for the object, in order to make a decent profit and sell enough items to make the whole business worthwhile. It's a balancing act. As a final note, "affordable" is a synonym of "reasonable". Think about it. Stan
Offense noted by at least me. Maybe some others will come forward too. I am sure I am not the only one. There is a lot more to this story than is written here. Ken in NC I know this post won't stay up long.
Hi Stan I hope that you do not think that my comment had anything to do with what you had previously said - I could not even remember at the time what you had said. My comment was made because of Longilily's reaction to Ken's comment, "A good tool is worth the expense of a craftman making it." I know Longilily personally and wanted to support him and to put the record straight. As well as being a great guy, he is also a professional engineer with a lifetime of experience. One of the problems with purely textual communication is that sometimes meanings can be taken two or more ways.
I'm struggling to see what all the fuss is about although I can see how Stan has interpreted things. The tool price is what it is, as all will see when it is listed. It's not something me or Ray are getting rich from believe me! It will be an excellent, quality tool at a good price. I get asked (as the Fettlebox) repeatedly if there is a tool available. I told folk what I know - Two I know off. One, a near-fit screwdriver bit is rubbish, the other bespoke tool is excellent but doesn't seem to be listed anymore. The Fettlebox tool has been in the planning for months to meet customer demand - held up by my delay providing caps for testing. If there's more to this story then it escapes me! I'm happy to be enlightened. I don't even know what 'the story' is. Why would your post be deleted? I genuinely don't understand that.
I don't own a stove requiring a penta wrench but I did notice there are penta wrenches currently available on eBay. I'll post the link in "Auction Watch." Judging by the photos and description they seem like a quality tool. Ben
Well spotted, Ben. It looks like BD has three penta wrenches for sale. Reports from members indicate that they are of good quality. Years ago before any of these tools/wrenches were available I filed down an oversized Allen key - it took me about 20 minutes. It works fine and so I don't need another penta tool, but a reasonably priced 4-in-one tool will be attractive if it is reasonably priced.
Nice one Ben. With an added taper over the original tool he offered. What are the tools (plural) that Gary refers to as inferior? The only other available one I'm aware of is the Quietstove drive bit. I guess he could be referring to the Fettlebox tool as he has quoted from this thread in his auction description. I'd hope not. The owner of Optimus at the time kindly sent me two of the last runs of 8R to come out of the factory . I never looked closely at the cap (same as 'Climber' 123) but they & the Katadyn, as Ray noticed when he recieved them, are hex, not Penta. I don't know when Optimus changed from Penta to Hex.
My guess would be the use of five-sided security Torx-bits that have previously been the easily accessible five-sided solution - but they do leave marks in the soft brass sides if it's thread-locked in place...
Me too !! In fact since the last Newark (last May, And to be fair, you've also been busting your arse with the new platform for CCS), But at that time.... That's right, none were available at that time Me too !! Aside, I don't agree with 'Affordable' meaning 'Cheap' neither, it's just a case of making a 'Multi tool' fall within the financial reach of almost all stovies. I'm sure Stan's comment was just him merely asking if it was gong to be a tool he could afford. Your right there Ross
