Hi Ben - I appreciate your good intentions. I can assure you it is not a case of pride or fear! We are perfectly entitled to link to whatever publically available resource we wish - be that other forums, blogs, websites, or social media. The way youtube works by default is that links embed the video - it's the way youtube want it to work. In the case in question the source of the video was lmentioned & praised. If the owner of that resource wants to password protect, take down or otherwise place obstacles that's for them & them only to decide. When I get around to rebuilding our links section it will include links to all such resources I can find. There are many other stove sites out there. I/we do not need their permission to link to them. Is that not of benefit to the stove community? The video has gone. Plenty of info re SRV's in non-video form is still here & furthermore can be added to & discussed as always, something the video never offered the community. Funnily enough I did mention it may have been taken down for editing or somesuch. Good to see Gary is now inviting comment on his resource.. Normally a one way street. & Yes he does get the odd dig in to a certain well-known stove site in his vids & blog from time to time http://www.berniedawg.com/truth-its-hard-to-find/
G,,day to all . i have also hesitated in replying to this lot of comments . up front , i get on well with Gary . this has nothing to do with the following comments . i believe it is somewhat rude to have a go at someone , when they cannot reply . i have this belief for all people . regardless of whether i agree or disagree with the person . i also must comment on this thread going totally off topic . i am fairly sure that if i took a thread this far off topic it would at the very least get moved , possibly even locked . let us please get back to fixing stoves , in this case SRV,s much nicer than trying to put people down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is my opinion . i may be wrong . i may also not make any other comments on this topic . cheers kerry
I agree as well. ... And there's another thread (nothing about Gary or stoves) that could do with the same. Cheers Tony
Getting back to SRV's...... Strangely enough Ken, the pip was fine, though ofcourse it will be changed ! But, the point is, I didn't find a melted mess as expected. Maybe because tension on the key was applied as the screw was heated till the screw gave way. Maybe the heat I envisaged wasn't necessary to break down the thread lock cheers
I would always assume if someone is going to the trouble of heating the screw to help ge it out that their intention is to change the pip & seal. We may need to put a note with the tool to change the washer after replacing the pip!
When I removed a fuel line tube from an Enders stove that had thread lock on it, it took a lot of 'High Heat' to get the lines thread to free up. Picture the smoke rising and the resulting charred wick. I can safely assume not all vintage thread locked screws will take low heat to free them. I have no doubt that sometimes the person that assembled that stove, years ago, may have been a 'new guy' and put too much thread lock or the wrong thread lock on the thread. Or maybe it was assembled on a Monday morning (Hangover) or a Friday afternoon (Ready to go home). We have all heard of the lemon cars made on a Friday or Monday. (Maybe that would explain Doc's tool twisting. Just throwing that against the wall to see if it sticks) Ken in NC
If the type of thread lock they used is similar to todays product, it might be able to dissolve it with acetone or ethanol, depending of which type it is. A long soak in either fluid might loosen it up. Of course, if it's acetone that is used, any rubber will probably be screwed up too, just as with excessive heating. But as Ross says; I expect that those parts are meant to be exchanged anyway.
I do agree, but not necessarily always the case. I would like to think that an inspection of the parts would be the first item on the agenda. Replacement comes after inspection reveals an ineffective part. That is assuming we are talking of a 'Classic Camp Stove' and not just any stove. A collector is a bit different from the user in that respect. This forum is composed of both collector and user. Original parts may be an important part of the stove, at least it is for me, and some of the stoves I have. Now, I do not have any of those recently sold, high end, out of this world, valued stoves. That is another whole different story. Ken in NC
Yep. I agree. Then the soaking in ethanol might be a good option. If the thread lock is of that kind which dissolve in ethanol, that is.
I enjoy a good dust-up as much as the next guy. And this one has not disappointed. What was the ETA on the availability of the SRV tool from the Fettlebox? Also, is there a link to the consummate info thread dealing with servicing and setting an SRV?
Hi This SRV tool has protracted itself quite a bit since its original conception. It started with a basic 'Penta-Key' (Allen key style) which then turned into a 'Z-key' (Penta one end, square the other end), which then turned into a 'Multi-tool ( Penta, square and Slotted drive, a 3 in 1). The fourth type of drive is a standard 3mm hex drive and thus readily available via a standard metric Allen key. Then the project turned into a debate about the material to be used ! Stainless steel was the original choice, and is still our preference, but there will always be the person who prefers the 'high end', 'high spec' tool so flame hardened/tempered 'Silver steel' was brought into consideration at a higher cost. So, our debate was, what tool to make out of what material do we make just the Penta key for those with Penta screws ? What about the chaps with square screws, ok, so we make 'Z' keys ? But they might not have a need for a Penta drive ! What about the stovies that have the slotted variety who aren't happy to slot themselves a screwdriver, ok so we make a 3 in 1 ? In short, this is where we are, We have already made 40 stainless steel Penta-Keys, we have cut and bent 40 silver steel keys, 20 for Penta-Keys, 20 for the multi-tool, ready for machining this coming week then they'll be hardened and tempered as standard, at that point I'll mail them to Ross for him to deal with, and hopefully satisfy people that want 'Just the Penta-key' from both stainless and hardened steel. ( if you have more than just the Penta drive, then you may wish to consider the multi tool, which will incorporate the Penta drive, then you won't be buying twice ) The next stage will be the Multi tool, the Penta, square and slotted drive incorporated in one tool made from both stainless and hardened steel ( to satisfy both camps, cheaper and adequate versus higher spec but more expensive ) , time wise, I'm expecting to have posted to Ross 40 Stainless, 20 H/S keys by the end of this coming week, so I'll be looking at starting the multi tool the week after ! Hopefully from these being sold, we'll be able to suss what material is favourite and then we can continue that particular rang. If you have the square drive only, and therefore only want a square drive key, then show your interest ! I can easily make a small batch of square drive only keys of maybe 10 at a time from stainless steel (unless H/S is specified . 40 stainless steel Penta-keys ready...... As soon as I've machined and hardened the 20 H/S keys, I'll get them off to the Fettlebox. Cheers
@Longilily Thank you very much for the information and update on the penta key. @boknasild thank you for the excellent tutorial on the search function, being a dim human, I often need things explained to me very slowly. Perhaps next time you could type in all caps. That would probably be very helpful as well. Since you are being so helpful, perhaps you could link to the thread you deem to be THE consummate way to set an SRV.
The advice is pretty good actually. Most forum search engines don't cope well with 3 letter search terms. We have the enhanced 'Elasticsearch' here which deals with it nicely & even smaller terms! Very handy when folk want to research 123 or 00! I like this thread - ignore the snarkiness within it & follow the other links in it for more reference. My favourite because it does away with all the pressure guages & deals with the issue in a common sense way. Some of the video's are no longer available https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/tell-me-about-svea-srvs.26769/
Morning, Longililly, Looking good, Mate! Well done! Please put me down for one of each, and let me know how much to send, when the time is ready!! Thank you, again, for some stellar work! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hello Longilily, Will these possibly be ready in time for Christmas gifts? I would like at least 1 H/S maybe more depending on price.
Hi Gremlin Which tools do you refer to ? If it's the 'Multi Tool' then possibly, I've started them but I'm away for most of next week, a bit of time away with my Mrs as life's been a bit hectic for me of late, so probably won't be able to complete them till the week after that , which may leave it a little tight time wise. I would hate to commit to a schedule only to let you down especially being a Christmas pressie ! I will try my very best though !!! If it's just a 'Single' key, as in a 'Penta' or a 'Square' drive that you refer to, a selection of both types in both materials are already with Ross, somewhere around 80 tools all together so far Cheers
