Has anyone tried any of the aerosol extinguisher sprays available? I don't think they are made to take on petrol or oil fires but for a runaway stove that may not be as important as the fuel source for the fire is contained in the tank. I wonder how a cooling spray would work, they are quite cheap so I think I might try one out. BTW, I used to try "new" stoves in the bathroom on a metal tray on the washing machine next to the bathtub filled with enough cold water to immerce the stove with a quick push to the tray.
I would cease and desist any idea of pushing a burning stove into a bathtub full of water. Chances are if its burning its also leaking and that fuel will float on the water and keep burning. Re the fire extinguishers they all can be described as aerosols so I dont know what you are describing. If the tin says dry powder or the active ingredient is sodium bicarbonate or magnesium bicarbonate its probably ok if big enough for the fire at hand. I have a 1.2kg dry powder extinguisher in each of my cars and 2 of the same in my kitchen. I should move one to the garage.
The idea was that the cold water would lessen the pressure and help bring the paraffin below it's burning temperature. I'm not sure how many liters a half full bathtub contains but against the amount from a leaking stove I'm sure it would cool the liquid down, especially as a wet towel or mop could both suffocate and help cool it down by pushing it below the surface. This is the sort of thing I meant http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/hus-...d-rok-gas-vatten/ovrigt/slackspray-112-p21112 Please be aware that they repeat in the video that this is NOT to replace a real fire extinguisher but as an aid in fighting beginning fires quickly.
Hey, Nick, Been away for a while, and was sorry to hear that you had a "near miss" with your stove play! Thank God you were not hurt badly, and your house escaped what could have been a very bad end!!! We have a fire extinguisher near where we "make fire", and also have a large box of baking soda close at hand, just in case it's needed. So far, we've not had to worry about either, but you never know when "your time" might be upon you, right!?! Again, glad you were not seriously injured my friend, and hope you never have to endure that sort of thing! God Bless! Every Good Wish, Mark
