Finally aquired a fully engraved svea 123 I have been after for a while. (These are hard to find). It has the engraved windscreen , fuel tank, fuel tank cap, burner bell, burner top plate, key, correct keychain, and has the solid vaporizer. I also believe the jet has a marking on it and 1 piece jet cleaner. I am "thinking" I got a good original stove, not one pieced together. It runs, but needs cleaned up as it is oxidized in the pics I got. Will do the hot water test, but am considering taking apart and replacing the wick and redoing the fuel cap so its done even if no leaks. I have a svea123 now and it works great, but it is a ringed model and I wanted an original. Since i have one working stove i use for hiking, i can take my time getting this one cleaned up. Will get some pics posted once I get it.
Congrats. Welcome to the Sievert 123 Tribe. Enjoy the ride. Use care removing the vaporizer. I soak with Kano Kroil for quite a few days before I try, just to ensure it does not twist the tank. The material is thin around that area. I lock the vaporizer in a vice and turn the tank with a strap wrench. There is quite a bit written here about replacing the pip in the fuel cap. There are a few variations. Ken in NC
Searching for a wick is easy. The best way is a 100% Cotton Mop. It must be 100% as any synthetic material in the wick can melt and be very difficult to remove. There have been some fiberglass wicks, but I have tried to stay authentic on mine. It needs to be 'stuffed' but not too tight. (Please excuse this term, I am in the USA and that term has a different meaning here that other places. )
Here it is. I am thinking it is late 50's. Didnt try any water test or running it yet but smells like it had regular gas in it. Will get started on cleaning it up. I like the fold-up jet cleaner more than this one though.
Howdy, @Mustang67ford , I add my own welcome to the Sievert SVEA123 Tribe!! At first glance, I’d say your’s is either a V2, or V3 model, and probably late 1950’s to early 1960’s. Great stoves, those, and well worth owning, and using!! Definitely, change the fuel cap gasket, and the SRV pip, and might as well replace the wick, too. But, pay heed to the advice that was offered by @snwcmpr . You don’t want to twist off your vaporizer!!!! Congrats on getting your nice old SVEA, and thanks for sharing it with us all!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Thanks, i have been trying to find a thread on making a new wick. Do i use just 1 mop strand? I also read where the wick does not gu up quite the wholw ways in the vaporizer. Will be getting cap pats from fettlbox but they are out of the wrenches at the moment.
This might help too: http://www.colemancollectorsforum.com/post/fettling-a-optimus-80-7842635?pid=1290217475
Woo-hoo! Someone is having fun. All good advice. When pushing the mop strings up, you will know if it is too hard, too many mop strings, or too easy, not enough mop strings. Firm but not tight. There will be a wire, attached to the strings, to carefully remove from the old strings .... if the old string is bad. You may find the old string is good, no brown scorching. Anticipating. Ken in NC
Will be starting on it here today. Looks like the vaporizer may have been off once before as where wrench goes is a little rounded on on side, you can see it in the pics. Not bad, but slightly. Rest of it is good
Here it is, all shined up. Did a freezer then hot water test, no leaks. Didn't touch the wick or cap. The one flame pic is low heat, then full.
Purty. Just be helpful. You did not polish with an ammonia based product, I hope. Known to possibly cause cracks in brass pressure vessels. Ken
The Flitz Paste has ammonia. https://www.flitz.com/content/MSDS-MetalPlasticFiberglassPolish-Paste_16pt.pdf
