What an enjoyable weekend. Great pals, great weather, great food, ample beer. And some stoves and lamps, too. A selection of my photos... Malcolm's excellent display, focussing on Tilley heaters. Obviously he's never used a Bowl Fire, or all these would end up in a skip Old and new friends Fat being chewed. This was on the Thursday as thunder and lighting attempted to dampen our spirits More chat Call Norris McWhirter... Dave's quick-boil stove Saturday night's beer-fuelled chat.
Excellent , A1, The best yet , Ready for another meet next week ..A really great gathering , with NEW faces fitting in like lost friends ........ & && The Weather Whats there to say , that hasnt already been said?? What pics to post .... well , one or two new ones Malcolm's excellent display ...... great guy to have as a neighbour Ross's 'bombproof' mountain tent ... being tested here for U.V light tolerance .. the tent isnt soundproof .. or at least not enough to contain his snores .... but , hes not too bad to have as a neighbour either :-) Ohhhh & whats this???? ... ill be blowed ... its a picture of a stove (Yes, this was a stove gathering ) This was a delight .... A Mr.M 'Special' ... a 8R burner in a Trangia 27?? (the small Trangia) via a Nova fuel line & pump , supplied with panel wipe from a 'small' Sigg type fuel bottle .... very adjustable & just the right size for the 'system'... when 'cranked up' this is the result... contain yourself Spudz :-)... & super simmer control ... nice one Ian . Now this is something you dont see every day ... Most folks departed Sunday afternoon , Bill Lovell , Ian & myself all enjoying the weather & having no commitments, like work on Monday , stayed on another night ... packing the 'festival' tents away in the warm of the Sunday evening & pitching our 'bivvy' tents , figuring on an early get away on Monday a.m ..... Well that didnt happen as planned , a leisurely breakfast , accompanied by coffee & followed by coffee & a little snackette 'for the road' saw a 1330 departure ... where does the time go?? Heres the evidence .... Mr.M 'lightweight' camping .. Previously hes told me "Lightweight camping ?? That means leaving the trailer at home " :-) :-) All in all , A great weekend .. thanks to all who made it so ..Really great to meet Ed , Doron , George ........... & the rest of the 'paraffinols' Roll on the next 'stovie' meet ... next week wouldnt be soon enough. Nick
HI Guys It really has been one brilliant weekend. Them 4 days flew by, with a tat too much beer at times, been counting black sheep, a tat too much bacon to make up for the beer and too little Petromaxes I do have to admit I had hard luck with almost every lamp i lit, so I took a brandnew, never used Optimus 200G pressure lamp and lit it. 8) For 30 seconds it ran nice, when i discovered that the pump valve was leaking like crazy. I was boiling, killed the lamp and left it cooling.... Now Nick (brassnipplekey), ever so handy, had just the right valve about, which we replaced. Ever since, it ran like soooo beautifull. Virginity, hmm, sometimes it is painless, sometimes not I will post a nice picture of the lamp tomorrow. It was soo nice to see you all back again, much better talking face to face over a nice Douchess beer. As rain was promised I brought my rain coat, which was very handy with temperatures over 25 C. |imgRemoved| Great to see Doron and Bill and Ed for the first time, and a shame that Sputz couldn't come. Thanks Ross and Mick for organizing, and for Ian that brought me a tent, so I could bring more lamps, ehrrr stoves, cheers to ye Lads! P.S., my father was admitted in hospital during the weekend, so was a bit stressed and forgot to use the bloody camera. Dad is doing so so at the moment, his bloodcount is still very low, He seems not to be making any blood cells, red white or in between It is not caused by using painkillers, so it is a blood desease, and we will know if it is bloodcancer or some sort of blood desease in 12 days.
Greetings Gents, I really enjoyed the additional photos. The displays were great, and I always enjoy the group photos ! My hats off to all. Doug
Bart, I hope your dad pulls through. My TWA disease is flaring a bit this morning. Anybody have more photos of Ross's mountain tent? Ross, what brand, year? Also, what are the two tents in the second photo under "old and new friends?" Mr. M lightweight camping - I'm surprised he allowed himself to be photographed in such a state.
Ahhh what a do!! just a plane fly away!! Boy o boy love to get umounst all them stoves. Probably come out with a lamp as well. Glad the weather was all and good for the week-end Barra
Hi Ian, This is an awesome setup. Talk about thinking outside the (blue) box! How difficult was it to accomplish? How is the burner supported? You are the man! Cheers, Manny
Excellent weekend! Good to see new & old faces & to relax among friends - thanks to everyone who attended for making it a memorable weekend. We're planning on going earlier next year - missed too much fun! Great to see big Ed Winskill & Debbie & Doron & Bart make it over. Even some of our UK visitors had travelled a hell of a way. Thanks for supporting the event. Alan the tent is a Phoenix Phortress - not a good pic as I have the whole porch tied back. c1980. The green tent is Nick's Phreak - used one of these for a good few years - excellent 2 man tent I may use it on a night soon so will get better pics Here's my display this year. For the keen cyclists among you (Alan again!) check out the highlighted stove. It's a Primus 96, complete with original Primus saddle bag. The stove's parts fasten to an insert for transit. The bag is made of a sort of coated canvas made to look like leather. Bill Lovell told me what it was called at Newark but I forgot! Primus did this outfit for the 210as well as the 96. I have to admit to deliberately not putting any catalogue pages on the site that feature this outfit as I was keen to minimise competition - I picked up my 96 & 210 outfits on ebay for very little coin, I assume because viewers thought the bags were not original & the insert card was not shown. I know - it was bad of me!
Bart i sincerly pray for you and your pa that his health improves soon so you can quit worrying about him and get yourself a couple of good nights rest. lance
I've looked through the pictures I took and I've nothing that comes close to anything that has already been posted, so few pics from me this time. I would like to thank everyone who turned up at Newark, be it for a flying visit or longer stay, especially those who travelled great distances to do so. There's always lots of interesting things to see but it is the people who are the event. Without you it would be nothing. On Friday evening I received this: in anticipation of my birthday (25th, if you must know!) on Saturday. It caught me on the hop and I was totally gobsmacked. A big thank you to you all.
Hi, What a great time you all seem to have had. SItting here in Cold wintery NZ i'm very envious of the sunshine and all those stoves and lanterns.. The Pheonix Phortress Is lovely also why does'nt any one make a tent like that any more Cheers John
Happy Birthday Anniversary Ian. Only 25th is it? i'd say your life up to now must have been pure 'ell. lance
Ross, great pieces of kit. Do the Phortress and Phreak have a flysheet separate from the tent canopy? From the photo it is hard to tell. A similar era tent made in the US will have a separate flysheet that typically does not stake directly to the ground. It will have guy lines running from the fly to the ground - better ventilation but worse in a really bad storm (horizontal, wind blown rain). Here is an example that style. Many of these tents came from companies based in California where ventilation is a bigger issue than really bad storms. One of the things I'm missing from a well-rounded vintage setup is a traditional A frame tent. I look occasionally on ebay, but the better known brands seem to fetch more than I wish to pay. I'll find one eventually; ebay rewards those who are patient. The Holy Grail may be the Trailwise Fitzroy but these seem to be very rare as I've seen only 1 or 2 on ebay over a 5 year time. Had this tent come with a rainfly I may have chased it hard, but I want something complete out of the box. I have a stack of labor of love projects to repair in my basement as it is.
