Can anyone tell me about the Primus 71 Short. My brother purchased this for me while in Washington State. It has NO markings on it that I can find except for "Sweden" on the stem under the burner bell. I have seen the gallery and there are a couple of pictures of someone who has one but there was no information about the stove. I am interested in the history of all my stoves....but this one is eluding me a little. attached are a couple of pics of the stove. Thank you for any information that you can provide. Edgar
There were a few short tank versions. The earliest was from the 30's and had a small fill cap without an SRV section and had soldered pins for over pressure safety release. The one you show is much later with an Optimus key and SRV filler so it's from after Optimus bought the Primus liquid fuel stove rights. Could be from the Primus Trading Co. years. 60's maybe?
This is a fine example of a small brass stove. Did it go with a Sigg combination billy/frypan set? Cheers Simon Foxxx
Thank you Ray, Yes the stove on the left is one similar to what you described with the small filler cap and the soldered pin. Thank you for Identifying the key and cap as Optimus. That really helps me understand the Vintage and I will have to continue the search for more information. Simon; I am unaware if it was part of a billy/frypan set. I sure would like to know. Thank you both for your time and knowledge. I will try to remember it and pass it on when ever I ever get the chance. Edgar
OLD THREAD fyi tag @Edgar, @Ray123 Hello again Manzanita @Manzanita , Re your recent "Original Sticker" shorty P71 reference post (there may be an add/change to your "title"), thank you for posting your example. Everyone should have a at least one shorty P71 , here is yours: Your post relates to this OP, the history of shorty P71 and yours is like the OP's example above except, above Edgar has Optimus key and chain (yours a Primus key & chain). Optimus may have produced yours and his very near same years? (63/64 ?) In your reference post you ask question: "No date stamp to be found on it. Any suggestions from the stove-knowledgeable ones here on the forum?" If I had clear answer I would post it there (a concise answer can still be posted there for future reference). I do not yet have a definitive answer. There are a lot of P71s in gallery but I suggest you review the posts of the later P71 shorties for details. I'll comment here and welcome further Q&A and discussion here (vs in a ref. post, it's just me). SO, re: your shorty Primus 71 example vs (larger) Primus71 / Optimus 80, which has maybe become the standard. The shorty Primus 71 was in-production from earliest P71 example until long after Optimus began producing them. So they were sold the whole time but we don't see as many of the shorties (more buyers chose larger tank version). That said, myself, I'm less clear on what changes occurred when for the shorty P71. Those changes may or may not have occurred at same time as the standard size P71s / Op80s. You're interested in sticker. I have nothing to add as to when it was in use, if original or added (interesting, yes). I too will be interested if we may learn something from your example. Again on shorty I'm less clear on but I "think: > your **tank is Optimus made (no space for a Primus date code on tank at vaporizer connection). > your filler cap is Optimus part 298D. Yours is not complete and so not best example to reference BUT imo, it's more likely that the sticker, chain & key shipped with it. If so, >>>that may place your example closer to 1963/64? <<< thx omc [[[ TMI: if it did not come with Primus chain and key... **The tank: is stamped with same Primus logo as genuine Primus (Optimus did that) but at some point, standard size P71/Op80s, went with labels (tanks no longer stamped). That does not mean they stopped stamping tank of the shorty P71s at same time. I dunno how long the "Primus" stamping on shorty P71 tank continued? or approx. what year ended use of 298D cap? .. yours predates that approx. year ]]]
Wow! Thank you so much @OMC . This is fantastic information. I’m especially grateful for the information regarding the breakdown of the Optimus produced parts. As for the title, please do edit or repost. Actually, I meant to retitle it but couldn’t figure out how to once it posted.
