Ah, yes.
Sulla was also pretty late, though. Most dictators were from older republican time.

But didn't the system worked pretty well? Perhaps they not always solved the imminent problem, but they generally stepped back when the limited dictator time was reached.

And to answer Presscall; I didn't start the 'Roman history talk', but I really do like history.
Especially antique such, so it's hard for me to not chip in to things like this.
Hopefully the fact that I help Ross out a bit with this site as a moderator doesn't mean that I can't participate like any other members in general talk, which you obviously imply.

And it's also OK to stray a way a bit in general foras. That's what they are about.

Not so, it’s just that there’s never been an occasion where you’ve shown any interest or recognition whatsoever in my contributions to CCS or CPL and when you’ve appeared in this thread it’s to join in with the off-topic blether and not the primary topic. It feels disrespectful, simply.

 

I don't mind the mix....I learned two different things here... Stove history with a repair I would not be able to do...and Roman history.

 

It all started with SS's "Hail Caesar", the perfect salute given to the Princeps of fettlers!

 

I personally don't know the the big deal is... And it's a Caesar stove... I had a couple of people talking about bikes on one of mine ... Didn't care one bit as they were obviously enjoying themselves. I learned a lot from Prescall posts but also found the history lesson on Romans cool too.

Life's short, doesn't violate any rules and it's a free country.

@igh371 yeah but it's still a free country.... The fettling forum rules do not restrict people talking about English road bikes in mine either but I didn't care....
If there's a rule somewhere that says you can't talk about anything in the fettling forum that doesn't follow the thread let me know?
Stove is a "Caesar" and they started talking about Julius Caesar...

 

And so, another wonderful tool has survived into the world.

Wicks installed (the thicker ones of the two thicknesses I ordered) and the tank filled with kero, the Caesar stove is running once more.






Contemporary catalogue entries for the stove speak of ‘blue’ flames. Not much evidence of that, though maybe a hint of blue below the yellow tips.




Blue or not, the heat output is very good and very controllable on the wick raising mechanism.

@presscall amazing job! I've seen these before in antique stores (like this but others with irons for clothes) and they're covered in soot. Are the trivets fragile? Just curious how this one got into pieces?
