I seem to recall that someone made a 96 burner bell from a dinner bell. I cant seem to locate it using the search function...but does anyone else remember this thread? Or have I completely lost my mind? Dave
I would guess that it's would not be too difficult to make a burner bell with a lathe. I have a burner bell from Optimus 96 and looks that is made by using pressing. I would guess that with lathe it would be possible to make burner bell from solid piece of brass by turning and from brass plate by spinning.
If I remember correctly, they took a dinner bell that was about the right length and diameter...and I think a tapered collar was made and silibrazed onto the base of it. A few notches for the flame plate and viola! A working 96. I hope I don't just dream these things.... Dave \ The reason I'm trying to find this thread is Kristi has an Optimus 96 sans lipstick and burner bell. I have a lipstick I'm sending along as I don't need it...and figured if I could locate the thread...well a working 96 could be in the offing..
You could also use a brass wine glass. I've seen many in thrift shops. I don't believe you'd have to silbraze the bottom tube on it as it's not in direct flame contact but I've never done a burner bell so quite possibly plain silver solder would do. However, I've never done one before. Advice guaranteed or your money refunded. Stan
Here's another example of making a burner from a small dinner bell! https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/17448 Murph
Murph...I believe that is the thread I remember...(not a 96 like I thought) but I do remember that thread. And Stan... kant spel.....must have been late or the beer...but I couldnt stop laughing at that. Dave
I took them for another project (flame spreader) but it's not a problem, I'm now looking for brass wine glasses or any other form of brass bells, because I've just got the '96 lipstick sent by Dave and my Optimus begins to take shape. Thanks again, Dave.
