Stovies Anonymous? It's like I can't help myself. I've got a 111b on its way, and I just got a second 8R. That makes 3 or 4 in the last month. I just keep finding good deals and it's causing problems. My wife is getting frustrated. So, how do I get the Mrs onboard???
buy her her own stove Wives are better at polishing any way. Seriously though if you show they have a purpose then she will come round. Take her camping and let her cook on one.
I do all the camp cooking. Now that I've got a larger one on the way I can employ it more while camping. I've been using the Coleman suitcases for the family, but they're not as charming. The 8r sized ones have to work pretty hard to boil a litre and half of water for coffee.
Tell her you are making an investment, with the interest rates so low you are future proofing your capital! Failing that bring up the shoe collection she no doubt has! Nick

Do like most of the members do - just lie! Hide stoves and when you are asked how many stoves you have bought in the last month, always say 'one' or 'none'.
Keep buying stoves. And give your wife my address . . . . (I'm kidding) Get her to light one and make a brew, it just might work.

Now up to five 1-pint brassies, two 1/2-pint brassies, 3 hike size butane/propane numbers, + globetrotter, Tilley talisman, trangia 27K + Chinese gassie adaptor, a kelly kettle, Coleman 400 and 442, a 123R and stesco. Plus still have access to the ones in the scout hut, 4 Tilley lamps, 2 coleman twin mantle lamps and an anchor lantern. Best regards John

I bought my first 8R last Oct but I already had 2 lanterns the 505b and a suitcase.
Your darling wife's input trumps new hobby. If you can find peace on the home front for wife and camp stoves (you're on your own imo I wish u well), if so, great! You have something going for you already, she eats what you cook. To USE your various stoves to prepare occasional meals WILL score points for keeping stoves. Re stove pox, 10 stoves in 8 months (that's nothin) so far, you're FINE imo. You shared "it's like I can't help myself". If you think fewer purchases would be better... you have stoves, lamps and heaters on your radar. Maybe pick your poison, pick 1, you have a nice group of lamps but I definitely vote for stoves. For me even "just stoves" there were too many, I "try" to focus collection on 1 burner liquid fuel pressure stoves. MEMO: Warning, storm cookers are a gateway-stove to camp cook sets. I keep losing that memo, I've ended up with cook sets / cookware / kettles that now, MOST of those have gotta go! Buying cuz "you found a good deal", I am sorry but if that is THE reason, typically that is a mistake (not just stoves), imo. That does work ie for the buy-low / sell-hi but involves SELLING. To collect or use stoves, imo, you first decide what you want, a wish list (or 2) if you will, then seek out what you want (or stumble across it). I hope you choose stoves but lamps maybe have an even bigger following? (if so "I don't get that". stovie). Collecting stoves (or lamps) and engaging CCS, CPL etc. online globally re your items adds a different relatively new aspect to our collecting and imo will tap into more and more interest (values of what is "popular" will go up btw). Good stovie advice I was given was research 1st as you search, choose wisely, decide what make, model and vintage you want. Subscribing to a site opens up even more reference information and other options. Be selective, BE PATIENT, buy complete stoves whenever possible. Examples of exactly what you want WILL likely come along and even more patience will get it at a good price (ie dirty neglected stoves that may need repair but are complete and not dented, bought on-the-cheap, can become the pride of your collection). This approach slows the process but also may not be for everyone, I happen to enjoy learning and doing the stovie research (impossible w/o CCS subscription, a stovie-bargain at double the price, thx again Ross!! oh, end of Aug a lucky subscriber gets a prize btw). I do not regret the investment of time/money and WITH researching, being selective and "buy low" when I can strategy, still my buying got out of control for awhile. I count shelves, not stoves (6 shelving units floor to ceiling) and looking for a display case. I AM thinning the herd, thinking 3 or less shelves and a case eventually. I've been bit on many buys and absorbed the occasional clunkers but overall I DO enjoy it w/o regret. You're fine. Give the wife a hug, just cuz. ATB omc
Thanks OMC. There's some good wisdom in there. My logic thus far has been, at least on the stoves: I need a suitcase for family camping. My first was my Dads, complete with the green metal stand. I picked up another because a) it was cheap, and b) I have two teens that will need a suitcase stove for their camping endeavors when they fly the coop. I picked up the 505B about 15 years ago and have used it purely for utilitarian purposes. It's served adequately but got no real love from me. It just works, but it's not pretty. Used it on the tailgate to heat up soup while hunting. I do a bit of backpack camping, and always brought a folding saw and small axe to cut wood to cook on. Then I did some math and found that: The weight and effort of carrying the saw and axe, plus the effort of collecting and processing wood, plus the hassle of building and maintaining a coal bed sufficient to my cooking needs was greater than the weight and effort of carrying a small stove and fuel. I had the 505B, but it was still a little heavy and a little tippy. Then I saw a video for the 8r that piqued my interest. Bought one off Kijiji for $50 thinking I'd spend too much (I don't think that anymore), and was off... Found a 199 at a garage sale for $10. total fluke. Set my sights on a 99 and found one on Kijiji. Bought it for myself for Fathers day. Decided I needed a Svea. Found a 123R for $20 Told the Mrs that a 111 would settle me down for a bit. For lanterns, I had dads 1966 200. Picked up a 335 that runs great, cause two are not too many and I didn't want to beat up dads lantern, then found a couple others at garage sales. I figured the 228F would be good for the hunting camper, putting out a few more BTU's. Gets cold up here.
just for scoring points take your $10 199 inside and put it beside the computer. Then go to ebay and browse the 199s for sale. Pick on a couple and let your wife compare notes. Then point out the potential profit should you sell it Then do the same with the $20 123r Problem gone. Even your 505b is probably worth more than you paid for it. You dont do that one justice though they are a great stove apart from there weight
Thanks geeves. My love for the 505B has indeed grown as I learned to appreciate its character. It cranks out a lot of heat.
Wow, that reminds me of a situation. My ex has always ENJOYED fast cars, we enjoyed my cars while we dated and were married. Life was good, fine. Age 18 - 35 I dabbled in muscle cars mostly 1967 - 72. I bought/sold/traded-up and at age 35 still had 5, each summer we drove 2 of them. She never had a clue re value nor was she interested, she could drive the wheels off all of 'em, and did. Money got a little tight I offered "the 72 Monte Carlo is in the way, maybe we should sell it". Being married for 13 years I knew "the look" she gave was doubting this. I said "it will sell easily for $3,500". Clueless re value she says "yeah right!" (as in no one wants that old car). Within days I deposited a check for $3,200, that day wife comes home "where's the Monte Carlo?" I handed her the deposit slip, she is elated, money crunch solved, little did I know... up goes garage doors on 3 cars, how much are the 66 & 67 chevys worth? How bout the 67 Tempest (gto-built)? I get jaw drop ... she adds, "we can keep the rag top." and there went my muscle cars. So if you put your 199 next to computer and show the 199 ebay sales numbers, she's liable to list it for sale on the spot... just sayin'. sorry for drift thx omc
