What have I got here folks? It is obviously French or from a French speaking area, and it is a stove/heater combination. The framework is bluish/green enamelled cast iron and the tank is thin brass.

The tank is suspended under the cast framework by two bolts and supported at the back by a strap to the riser tube covering.

The reflector is copper and is 300mm dia.
The height from feet to top of the pan-ring is 400mm.

The tank is 220mm dia. and about 80mm deep. It probably holds about 1.5 ltr.

The burner is not original, it is a Primus standard 2pt silent burner.

The pump shaft is probably not original either as it is about 35mm shorter than the pump tube. Also the pump knob is a replacement I am sure.

The air release screw is on top of the tank.

Any information, especially about the original burner design would be appreciated. I have found nothing like it in the gallery or the Library on both this site and CPL. Thanks - Steve

Hi Steve, I'm pretty sure I've seen these (or another make but definitely something very similar) on CCS before! Maybe it was an advert or so, maybe you'd have to have a look in the ref. gallery ? But a splendid looking device it is! :D/

    All the best,

    Wim

I would say that it has two usages.

Hi there Steve brilliant score, i love these French made iron stove supports/frames are really nice and ornate, they really set a old stove off.

I particularly like this enamelled iron work as it has a slight Art Nouveau style to it, the latter part of the period, possibly Edwardian

Done an initial small fettle and now know that the tank holds pressure. Also fitted a longer pump shaft and a new leather. Fished out an inner and outer set of caps for the Primus "Cookoo-in-the-nest" burner and as there is no spirit cup fitted, preheated it with a blow-torch. It did run, but very poorly as the "cookoo" burner does not seal well in its new nest. I need to see what the original burner was like and see if I can find or make one. I'll have another go at getting it going with the "cookoo" burner after I have cleaned the combo all up and will then post some more pics. Steve.

PS. That much for scrap Ian  I will probably keep it and use it as a door-stop then. Thanks mate :) .

Thanks Ian, That is the same item, but a different colour of enamel. I can now see what the burner was like, and now only need to find one   . Thanks very much mate. Steve.

The burner itself does look like a standard primus silent burner shape, but the burner cap is very different. Does anyone know if this combi actually used a basic Primus burner that was modified by fitting a different burner cap arrangement? I would love to get it restored to as clos original as I can. Steve.

    Hi Steve

Will be great when yours is working like the one in the link :D/ :D/ 8)

My Taylors fire uses a silent burner :D  & several other reflector heaters I have seen use a similar set up :D  hope this helps [-o< :D

Thanks Stu  , but unless I have an example to copy, or at least a reasonably accurate sketch I would not know where to start reproducing the burner parts. ](*,) . Also got another problem in that, at some time (probably when the Primus (Cookoo) burner was fitted, the riser tube outer cover has been crunched (mole-grips :?: ) [-X [-X and now will not slide back up over the riser tube hexagonal top. I need to somehow draw the dents out of that tube so that I can inspect the riser-tube within. Any ideas? [-o< I am now going to take it apart and give the beast a light clean and see if I can find any other marking/patents etc. I'll post pics as I do it.

    Steve.

    Hi Steve

If that top fitting is soft soldered on i'd remove that first , you should be able to bend that tube a little at the top to have a look :-k but thinking that may be unlikely  or i would fill the tank with water right up to the riser top & carefully anneal the outer tube with a blowlamp to soften it enough where it's dented in to clear the fitting [-o< then it's metal bashing time to re form/straighten the outer tube :D

What do you think :?: , Stu :D

    Steve,
The burner is a run-of-the-mill silent & the perforated dome sits on the lip of the burner. I'm away for the weekend but if you like I will measure up the dome and send you a sketch & some pics when I get back.

Stu - Thanks mate, I will have a go at annealing the outer tube first. Do I quench brass after geting to dull red heat?

Ian - Thanks also. So my Primus burner is not too far wrong then? A sketch and measurements of the cap arrangement would be great, thanks. Is there any sort of inner burner cap?

    Steve.

Hi Steve, like Ian said it uses a standard silent burner, complete with inner & outer caps. The perforated dome is extra (it gets heated by the silent to make it start glowing). I think it can be more or less copied using thin walled steel tube (a piece of the correct dia exhaust pipe would do fine with a disc hard soldered on top).

    All the best,

    Wim

Well :!: Tried the annealing to remove the riser tube cover, but it is too crunched ](*,) . So decided that this will remain a feature of this combo  . Got it cleaned-up, but still no sign of any manufacturer's name or any patent numbers etc :( :( . Anyway, I will wait and see what Ian can send me by way of burner-cap info and go from there. There is some evidence that this may have had a French "Cobra" style of burner originally; now that would be really nice =P~ =P~ . Thanks all - Steve.

OK, Cleaned it up a bit and this what I think. There are no maker's marks anywhere except the "Le Jumeau 2 Usages" cast into the base mounting stand. I have got it working, but there is a leakage at the burner to riser tube that allows air to get in causing the stove to pulse, gasp and gurgle like a geriatric 90 year old (which is probably what it is!). I really do not think that this 2 pint burner was ever the original burner for this combi. Reasons:

    1. It does not look right and it is too far below the pot stand to be effective.
    2. The depth of the recess in the riser tube to accept a burner is exactly 10mm. The depth of the threads on a 2 pint silent burner is 10mm. Ok allowing for a seal depth, say 0.5mm when crushed, that seems OK. But, the bottom face of the recess in the riser tube is grooved, indicating that the original sealling arrangement for the burner was at the bottom of the recess and not at the top, as conventional in a primus burner seal.

A single heat resistant washer between the Primus burner and the riser tube did not hold pressure. When a small viton Tilley vapouriser seal was put into the recess in the riser tube, with a seal also under the burner, it worked OK.

I do not think that this combi stove originally had a standard 2 pint Silent burner. I think that it may have had a Cobra type French roarer burner when new.

Anyway, here are some more pictures. I will not add it to the Reference Gallery as it is anything but a "Camp Stove" weighing about 5Kg!! Steve.

PS. Going to sell it if anyone wants to make a decent offer PT me.
