Sounds like your kerosene is not a high quality. I have my Optimus Nova set up to burn kerosene. I have had the stove a year and have never cleaned it. I use it about once a week.
I had trouble with the pump kerosene here. Said to be clear and undyed. I now buy the stuff in the can at Lowe's, a hardware store here.
