Morning, All, I would rate the simmer on a good 500 to be just about the best, but the 400 comes awfully close to being the same, in a good stove. The 502, whilst not quite as good as the former pair, also offers a very, very good simmer, that is predictable, and very dependable. All three stoves are flat-out fantastic when it comes to actual cooking, plus the 400 is a screamer when it comes to power, too!! The 500 and 502, whilst a bit less powerful on the top end, have MORE than enough power to get your jobs done, and done well!! With this trio of Coleman single-burner stoves, you're in for some top of the line stove fun, Mates!! Doesn't get too much better than that! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Geez Doc I'm feelin like Mr counterpoint, i hate that. Your experience is off the charts good with input that continues to be very much appreciated. Thank you for all you do. I'm a newbie, I'm learnin and "gotta a lot of nerve", I don't even have a 500 but re "the simmer on a good 500 to be just about the best". ASIDE from that i think i concur w/all info posted. That surprises me, would you have a "windscreen caveat" w/that 500 simmer?(w/what type windscreen?, as 500's orig windscreens are rare). The 500 burner is farthest from the pot and of the 3 benefits the most from a windscreen, even in no wind, to get consistent low heat to the pot. Some may say it NEEDS a windscreen. Simmer is not easy to compare? Would not low consistent heat AND more evenly distributed be factors. All 3 w/o windscreen, i would think would comes down to the 400 & 502, just me. 400 having an improved burner. Both 400 & 502 have improved burners vs the 500. "My "guess" is w/o windscreens they both may simmer better than a 500 w/windscreen, others disagree. Cooking some rice on a cool windy day may help me see how the 502 does vs 400. If 3 HAVE a windsceeen I think 400 will improve the most but, for simmer it may not be a noticeable difference. I'm not a know-all and this isn't the end-all. I often miss things along the way. It's just w/500's burner much farther from the pot, totally exposed... respectfully at least curious about rating it a "just about the best simmer", omc PS that said, the, as Gerry says, "reliable as an anvil" 502 is plenty good, like 400 in-all wind/weather so I like the 502. Personally i think I can say I will ALWAYS be happy to use it(winter camping, i may never do again, if i did in sub-zero, it be a 400 4 me). Camping in 10 below confession: Being an ill prepared young dumb numb nuts, my pot of water began to ice-over atop a stove... today, at 10 below I wouldn't take a 500 or 502.
