For many years I used a Optimus No. 80 with this tripod when I was travelling on my bicycle. I found it very useful fourty years ago and still do.

The self-made tripod has a rivet in the centre to make it foldable. I made it from a 4.5 mm diameter steel rod.

It stands safe on every ground, much better than any box.

For transport the stove and a little plasic flask for priming was in the blue cotton bag made from a jeans leg. This one is a new bag. As windscreen I used the bicycle bags or a folded cardboard. Today I would use a foldable aluminium screen.

On the key there is a leather sleeve to protect the fingers and in the sleeve there was the pricker.

The Optimus stove was a bit higher than the Primus No. 71 on the picture.

Some lateral thinking going on there Radler.

    Some questions:

    1. The tripod/pot rests were painted red?

    2. You favour keeping the adjustment key on the regulator spindle while the stove is in use? - with the leather insulator in place.

    3. What brand are the aluminium pots?

    Hello John

I painted the lower parts of the tripod with a common anti-rust grounding, the upper part gets too hot and is not painted.

Yes, the leather (from an old shoe) resists the heath quite well and is insulating good enough to protect the fingertips. I used a cotton yarn to sew the sleeve, no synthetics! On my Optimus No.8 I use a cork on the key.

The pot with the red handle is a French product (ROC brand). I bought it in the seventies, en route in France. The other pot is a very old, no name, 1 litre, scout pot with lid. I found it once on a flea market, maybe from the fifties.

A fine and simple solution, Radler. It solves the basic problem: the 71s and 80s have been much more limited in their usefulness than the Svea 123. The latter because of the Sigg set, mostly.

Those cases they come in are not really practical at all.

Truly, that little device is worth producing and selling.....

Maybe in a range of sizes.
Not sure that I'd paint them though. Sure as eggs is eggs some would end up stood over open fires when cooking backwoods style.

Some very nice ideas, I'm going to look into the tripod stand, really good idea too. I use a foil wind shield a lot now when using any stove, a lesson learned the hard way out in the wild. I still love the 71e though as a set up. Simple and compact.

Hi, I like the idea of a folding tripod stand but would prefer to keep the stand and hinge point out of the flame, where it will both steal
    heat and get weakened.
Here is an altenative approach to a folding tripod, which I would like to try with some of my large stoves/furnaces:

This approach should also work with smaller stoves and still fold up to a compact size.

    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.
