New Member and Svea 123 Windscreen Preferences

Haggis, that setup looks perfect. I'm referring to the Svea, bushpot, twig stove setup but as I look beyond that at your campsite I'm equally impressed by everything else. Is that a Souris River canoe I see in the background?

 

The SVEA 123 windscreen is a pot stand that provides minimal protection for the burner in a strong breeze. I use a windscreen made of folded aluminum foil several layers thick to surround it when I’m in the mountains and relief from wind is sparse. The SVEA’s windscreen/potstand converts the burner into a compact cooking unit and the foil windscreen folds down so it takes minimal space in my smallest pack.

The little pot holds 1.1L or 5 cups… On this 3 day trip, it was plenty for the two of us…

 

I use makeshift aluminum foil windscreens all the time; keep folded foil in the stove tins, etc. Most of the photos I take in camp for posting I take the foil off to showcase the stove. Then the foil goes back on. Sometimes just crimping foil on the pot supports. But usually you do need some windscreen.

I am going to second the recommendation(s) that you keep an eye out for a complete Svea123 or the R version. You may find one for not much more than the cost of just the brass screen/stand. Plus, you'll have a backup stove.

If you do go for the screen/stand by itself, make sure it did not come from one of the Asian (non-Svea) copies. They look almost identical but are just a tad too small to fit correctly.

 

Thats for sure.I've been looking at them mostly on ebay. They go for a range of $38-45 for just windscreen, but with a stove can range $50 to over $100 depending on the other items like original bowl, etc. It would be cool to get another stove for $30 in one if these deals.My current one is the 123, and I like the simplicity of it over the 123R. At least I have a new target when scanning thrift, antique stores, and yard sales.

 

Well folks I just bought another Svea 123 with the windscreen, pricker tool, and small pump. It looks to be in really good shape and came from a family were the use was known and it had been lit last year. Had to pay a little more, but it meant something more to me to get it from someone who had owned and used it maybe from new. Really looking forward to using it out in the woods with the original windscreen. It will be interesting comparing it to the Sigg Tourist for how they each fit in my pack. I'll need to search the forum for info on the tank caps that go with pumps and servicing those.
