new stove for mycollection

The big brown truck pulled up in front of the house today and delivered my new eBay find. It a Coleman 5402A picnic stove in very good to mint condition. I will post pictures later.

 

You just gotta love the Brown Truck of Happiness!!!

 

I am now in friendly terms with my local route driver!

 

Heck, eBay sellers know me and say they missed a part so will send it with my next order.

So here are picture as promised. I am not a fan of the color but, hey it a stove. I just wish it had a date on it. Someone told me the fuel canisters are hard to find.

 

Are butane canisters still available for that stove?

 

I'm not sure if they are or not, but the can on the left is full.

 

Hey cigarjoe, I do believe its a push in type connector and if my memory serves me right someone adapted it to use the 1 lb slim bernzomatic propane canister but did look a bit odd since the canister extended out of the bottom part. I believed he brazed a bernzomatic connector to the tube. The canisters are rare indeed and hopefully some members may stumble upon a few.

There are other alternatives such as refilling the canisters you have depending on how supple the rubber lips are. Another is to make an extended hose from the connector and a donor canister type connector.

Then again that depends on how you want it to be.

The canisters may be rare but every other stove on ebay seems to be one of the Coleman Picnic stoves in some hideous color. What were they thinking?

To the best of my knowledge, these stoves take the same cartridge as the Hank Roberts Mini Stove. There is a seller on eBay that has a listing for a refill adapter for these cans. It's not cheap and it is in Japan, but it may be the only good way to get fuel in the original canisters.

For the price of that refill adapter I could buy a new (or vintage) stove that uses modern canisters.

My understanding also is that the stove uses the Hank Roberts type canister, but perhaps you could pull one canister out (gently!) and we could see the canister's top?

I know others have found ways to refuel Hank Roberts type canisters, ways that didn't involve an expensive Japanese adapter.

I have purchased a Japanese adapter similar to the one linked to above, and it's excellent. I'm not trying to talk you out of buying an adapter; I'm just saying that there may be other lower cost options.

I wonder if a simple Brunton Fuel Tool would be enough to refill a Hank Roberts canister. I've refilled Rando 360 type cartridges with my Brunton Fuel tool, and it has worked well.

If you mate a Hank Roberts needle to a fuel canister adapter with a valve, you have a refilling adapter. It would require a sleeve with a 7-16"-20 female thread on one end and the appropriate thread for the adapter on the other.
