I came home after a hard days work, ready to give in. But then I found an envelope waiting for me...

It smelled like perfume! (It had an excuse us note attached to it from the post agency) Tearing open the envelope this is what I found inside!

    Mini and midi!

I decided to test the mini cap on my 123, which I will be taking with me on a winter hike next weekend.

    Still virgin:

Gary, like I said in my PT. You are an artisan! These caps are beautifully and skill fully made and perform great. I filled the little 123 pan and it was at a rolling boil way to fast!!!

Anyway, I love the small one and can't wait to test the midi one, but i can't yet.

Again, Gary, wonderful caps. I love them!

    Very neat caps.
It's hard to imagine especially the labour in drilling all those holes! Phew!

    BD46!?
Is that for the 46:th one made by BernieDawg?

    Me too.

The other one said MD10. I assume that is for the 10:th midi?
If so, I liked it better when it referred to the manufacturer in the stamping.
It was more personal that way, and good craftmanship should be signed.

Here, here. Signed by the craftsman is a good thing. I was thinking that the number was a model number not an ordinal number. Gary, care to enlighten us?

If MD stands for "midi-Dawg," then I think that's rather catchy (although signed by the craftsman would still be my preference). :)

UPDATE: I see that in this post here on the site, the cap is referred to as a BD20. Looks like it is indeed an ordinal number not a model number.

    Hi Guys
Thanks for all the nice comments. Ya'll are great! :D

Arjan, I'm glad you like your caps. The pics of the mini on the 123 are super. That's a quality burn.

About the caps. Ya'll are just smarter than me. Um, here's the way it works. My buddy from eBay, iloveyou99, suggested a long time ago that I put a logo on the caps if I was going to sell them. It turned out to be very expensive to buy a custom stamp, so I bought a number set and the letters "B" and "D". BD46 is indeed the 46th minicap that I've built. For what it's worth, I put together BD85 the other day. :o

I've been keeping an Excel file record of the caps and their owners. I'm not particularly good with numbers; or spreadsheets. It seemed confusing to stamp the midis with the same BD style numbers. And, in my head I'd been thinking of them as Midi-Dawgs all along anyway. So, that's why the change to MD numbers. I recently managed to score a complete set of letter stamps for reasonable. The MD numbers are also consecutive numbers reflecting how many I've built. With the Midi-Dawgs, as opposed to the BD's, I had built a series of proto-caps of rather wildly different designs, so some of the very early weirdies were not counted. I retain all those or have dismantled them for experimental parts.

My apologies to those who are feeling the MD numbers are less personal. I hadn't thought of that. I guess I was thinking it was a model change sorta thing. :-k Oops.

Currently, I have two general classes of caps:

Small diameter caps (1 1/4" tubing) - the mini-caps, BD caps, or BernieDawg caps, whichever you choose to call them. They all have three rows of holes and a baseplate diameter of 35mm.

Medium diameter caps (1 1/2" tubing) - the Midi-Dawgs. True Midi-Dawgs all have four rows of holes and a baseplate diameter of 40mm. Within the Midi-Dawg class, there have arisen two variants, the Nova-Dawg or Dawg-a-Nova cap - a 4 or 5 row cap with a baseplate diameter of 44mm for use with the Optimus Nova/Nova+, and the Omni-Dawg cap, a six row cap with a baseplate diameter of 39mm for use with the Primus Omnifuel.
To date, there have only been three Nova-Dawgs built.
The Omni-Dawg is pictured currently as my avatar picture. It's official debut will occur at the California Stove Gathering #3. It's the most powerful cap I've built to date and has unique features that make it a really neat cap (in my not-so-humble opinion). It completely captures the full potential of the Primus Omni-fuel burner. You can not over drive it no matter how much you pump and it works well with all three fuels - isobutane, white gas and kerosene. The high amount of labor to build an Omni-Dawg may mean I'll have to price it differently if I decide to sell them. You can watch a YouTube video of dubious quality of the Omni-Dawg at work here:
    Omni-Dawg video

To confuse matters a bit more, the true Midi-Dawgs and the BD caps have been produced in all brass, brass with steel spigot tubes, all steel and steel with brass spigot tubes.

For the future... well. I suppose I could mention that I've acquired a small amount of 1 3/4" brass tubing for experiments directed toward a Primus/Optimus 100 cap much like the Primus 4010 currently available from Base-Camp. I also need to work out a cap for the Brunton AF Vapor, mainly because I have one and it's the loudest roarer backpack stove I've ever heard. So loud it hurts. And, don't get your hopes up, but I also have some stainless steel tubing in the BD and MD sizes and carbide drill bits for experiments with possible stainless versions. The huge labor for stainless work may not make those come out to a viable price point even if I can work out the production bugs.

This answer is obscenely long and you have my apologies for that. But, I think I covered it all! :p It's Friday and it's after five, so I reckon it's time for a wee bit of recreation! friday.gif

A huge hug-filled thanks to all the folks who are cap owners!

    Cheers,
    Gary

    Gary,

Great answer and not overly long at all. Love that OmniDawg with it's beautiful simmer and gorgeous mid-range flame.

Looking forward to CASG3 and all the goodies!

    Hey all,

With the wonderful result on the SVEA 123 I decided to test the cap on my Russian 8R clone:

I didn't want to wait, so I used my 'rapid pre-heater'
    1264371852-230120101246__Small_.jpg

For some reason the flame was a bit yellow, but it produced a very strong flame!
    1264371876-230120101253__Small_.jpg

    Of-course a tea test!
    1264371955-230120101249__Small_.jpg

    The flame underneath.
    1264372012-230120101252__Small_.jpg

I forgot to take a picture of the finished tea test, but it got the job done in under 2 minutes of about 0,25L of cold tap water. The cap fits the burner perfectly, as this stove has a 'ledge' on the burner, which fit perfectly, as if the cap was made for it ;)

    very impressive!

    gr,

    Arjan.

Sorry to disappoint you Bill, but I did not make those, thay came with the 123 when I bought it. But as far as I can see, they are pieces of bend brass rod.

    gr,

    Arjan.
