Thanks mate. It's my new Hiker III+ (Unfortunately in the new Optimus colour scheme- BTW has anyone noticed the website is now coloured the same...new across the range colours?) and my UK army "Crusader" steel mug.

Great stove isn't it? :D I think it's a little under rated and does'nt get the attention it deserves. The regulater on this stove is the smoothest one i've ever seen, best design i've ever seen i just wish the tank was brass and not steel. Other than that this stove is a 10+ hiker4.jpg

    Take care

Just an update: I received my 111t from Old Grouch yesterday, in good condition in the original Optimus blue. I fired it up on Kerosene and it seems to work pretty well, but took several primes on alchohol to light off. This is the first 111 I've seen and I agree with the numerous opinions, it's a really powerful stove, a real rocket.

Question: a small brass tube came packed inside the stove. With the silent burner caps off, this tube will fit inside the riser tube on the stove. It has a hole through the tupe about 1/2 in from one end. What is the extra tube for? Also, I had a difficult time filling the priming cup with alcohol. What type of vessel / bottle / funnel do you recommend for getting the priming fuel into the cup without spilling half of it. Thanks.

Okay, not happy. :( Firstly yours is all black. Why damn you :?: ;) Secondly, you've got the service spanner/tool. How come :?:

I like yours better but the stove is brilliant.

I always seem to find out about these things too late!
Anyone know what type of price they are going for?
I would love to get one.

That's the restrictor tube for running the stove on alcohol. It goes exactly where you mention. You also need to get an alcohol jet to use with it to burn alcohol in the stove.

I use a little squeeze bottle with flip up spout from REI.

Come on now widu13, get a proper pan on that fine stove, not a crusader :( You are wasting serious heat and fuel using one the the army cups ;)

On a serious note, I use a bit of grill from a throw away BBW over the pot supports of 111's, it makes them stable for small pots like the Crusader or a small expresso pot (click to enlarge)

    Rik,

It was a Crusader specific test. Although indoors 3/4 mug of water rolling in 3.25 mins. BTW your III is well impresively battered. Are you restoring it or is that you "working weekend" one?

    Aln,

HT paint! Looks good I have to say. Have you put the clip in the lid to hold the tool?

That particular 111 sits out the back, exposed to whatever weather is current, and I use it for garden brew making, it always works (although I sometimes have to empty the can of water) :)

Take the outer cap off and carefully pour it down the hole. I usually use a surplus swedish mil meths bottle. It'll get on the burner too... but that's ok.

why take the outer cap off? Just pour it over the top of the outer cap/burner and let it drain down into the spirit cup. You can light the prime at the top of the burner too, much easier. D)

Thanks gentlemen, pouring the alcohol on the top of the burner works like a charm. I've been using the stove to brew coffee since I got it. I can appreciate why the 111 is so highly rated.

Umm...I just lift the wind screen off the burner and fill the priming cup with alcohol.
Whatever one feels comfortable with i guess :?

Before any one yells sacrilege, I have 33 years with my 111 (bought brand new) and the only thing I've replaced is the leather cups. Now I've really been thinking of having the case nickle plated. I'm around salt water with this stove on my water fowl and caribou hunts.

Does anybody have a source for leather cups, I bought six extra when I bought the stove and now need another six? I tried to make them, but no luck. Wiping the old one with butter is no longer an option, just to worn out.

As a new guy here, I sure want to give my old friend some new life!

    Hey, Big Al,

Check out our CCS Mate, Sefa, from Turkey. He makes the very best pump leathers you will ever find, his prices are good, and his delivery quick. What's not to like? Since I got my first leathers from Sefa, that's all I use on my stoves, as they work better than original leathers!! Do a search on sefa's pump leathers, and you can find him here. Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc
