Here is the Trangia one for comparison, huge time difference! I'm wondering if perhaps my Trangia is faulty in some way is seems to take a lot longer than any others on youtube. Maybe someone could give me some insight.

I've never done any tests, and probably never will, but I've used the 00 many, many times in the field, and the Trangia several times these last couple of years, and I would say that the keroburner is always hotter and faster.
Which is by no means to say that the Trangia is not fast enough!

But this is also congruent with my expectations. I would have been surprised had it been the other way 'round.

@Cameron If you want a quicker boil on the trangia, you must leave the simmer-ring/control off.
I'm not surprised it took a long time, since you only get about 0.5x possible effect out of it.

If you check the video at 2:20 you see the simmerring in position, and the lid also blocking a bit.

And as @Ed Winskill points out, the 00 is hotter than the trangia.

Someone else just mentioned this too, stupid mistake didn't realise it would make that much of a difference. I guess I will need to do another test and get a proper result!

    Hello Cameron,
I'm not sure if you're aware of the need to use the lower vent as a regulator also? Face it into a stiff breeze, and watch that baby go!!!

That being said, meths has a far lower calorific value than kerosene, and therefore the Trangia will never compete with a kerosene-fueled roarer burner.

The up-side of the Trangia is obviously the simplicity, no moving parts. Just make sure the wee holes around the rim of the burner are clear, and Bob's yer mother's brother.

The Trangia is fine if you're not in an all-fired rush, and is very quiet. I love mine for brewing up on the road, just as much as my Svea 123 or my Handy Camper coil-burner (but those two are noisy, of course.)

    Best regards,

    Mike.

@Cameron On the older version you had to use the lid to put out the flames.
The simmer ring was just a ring. You can see it here

Thanks for the help everyone, seems pretty obvious now. Had no idea about the lower vent though! Il remake the video tommorow and I'm sure the time will be much better, unfortunately that will throw off my optimus video too but I'm sure I will sort it out. Thanks again,
    Cameron.

Got both fixed so they are back up now. Removing the simmer ring did make a huge difference of course thanks for your help everyone!

@Cameron I don't think you got your 00 working properly...

If it was going full blast, the flareup at approx 3:48 should not happen. You might try to pump it up to (much) higher pressure. It should be considerably faster than the Trangia (at least I would expect it to be).

I link to a flameshot from this post to show what it should look like.

I agree with janders. You pumped it 6 times. I pump mine at least 15. The stove should be roaring (hence 'roarer burner').

Oh dear don't tell me I will need to remake that video too! Someone on here told me to pump it four times so I though six was more than enough. Stove was roaring but I will try 15 pumps next timr, you can probably tell I'm new to camping stoves! Just used gas before these.

Experience with the stoves is helpful to valid testing. My own opinion is that the Optimus going full blast will be significantly faster. But I've never tested them, so I couldn't prove it. Perhaps use the stoves for a little while and get familiar with their operation, and then test?

I have been using the optimus for a while but didn't pump it that much, trangia I admit I hadn't used before but though I would give it a go and record it. I will make another update video at some point and pump it up a bit more, glad I posted it here or I would never have known this!

A classic brass kerosene stove is controlled by the pump and the airscrew. It's sort of primitive in a way, but it works well.
Try pumping it those multiple times as suggested and see how it blasts. To bring it down a bit, let out air.
They will often very gradually lose pressure if not occasionally given a pump or two now and then. On the other hand, the heat of full blast with a pot on will usually self-pressurize the stove, which won't need further pumping during use.

Thanks for the information, like I said I am fairly new to these types of stoves but I really do like them. I will probably end up with more! 3-5 minutes is a really impressive time hopefully mine will achieve that now I know I haven't been pumping it enough.
