I spotted an Optimus 99??? on Ebay with a Buy it now price of £40 including postage so I did. It had all the parts including the pan and was in pretty good condition. The only thing missing was the base the burner mounts in. I decided to dig out my old mess tins from when I was in the RAF and cobble together a Frankenstove. Below are some pictures of the result. It lacks the finesses of some of the superb restorations seen on this website but should be fit for purpose. Cheers, Joe
That's a 199 Ranger, you did very well! Your solution for a new tin is both functional and looks the part. Jerry
Good Morning, Sir, A wonderful solution to your problem, and that turns your sow's ear, into a silk purse!!! HUZZAH!! Very well done and I'll echo the others in that you scored that 199 for a very, very good price!! Thanks for sharing your solution, and your "new" 199! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Very well done! Both the fettle and the score! About the only way I'll ever see one of those is to duplicate your luck.
An ingenious use of a plentiful resource - there must be millions of those army surplus mess tins out there not so the stove AND you have the mini pump - I am turning green as I type. Looks like you have the meths adapter too! Will those things run on alcohol? If so might be safer.
@JoeyO Hi Optimust here, It seems we found the same solution to the same problem. My 8r case was flattened under my car wheels some years ago, finding CCS prompted me to make another case, the route you made. From a mess tin set I now have a case & pan set , with storage for, a windshield cut to suit, pot handle, grid to bridge the pot supports for my mocha pot, & a lighter. I did not hinge the tank end of the case, but will, in the interest of safety. Your post was a joy to read, so take pleasure from your stove mod, I enjoy mine.My very best regards. Optimust.
Thanks everyone, I'm glad you approve, @Rickybob when I got it it was full of meths and it had the adaptor fitted but the cleaning needle was broken and jammed in the jet. When I changed the jet I put in an ordinary one and have only run it on paraffin. Hopefully this Sunday I'll get a chance to test it in the field. @Optimust is it for cooling that your planning to hinge your case? Thanks again to everyone for the support and help. Cheers, Joe
@JoeyO Hi JoeyO, Yes exactly. Optimus designed the 8R to hinge for that reason I imagine. It will mean repositioning the pot supports, but hey it will keep me occupied, and challenged. I hope I can post the images by then. My best regards in your stove adventures. Optimust.
