George, if the stove don't kill the fox, just set the dogs on it Back to reality, the spread of fuel just goes to show the potential for disaster if burning naptha; its made me think a lot more about lighting stoves in the home. I'll still light up paraffin/kerosene indoors but I'll give more thought to naptha. The only problem is that the Coleman kit is SO easy to light

Question for the metallurgists out there, are steel tanks stronger than brass? Ignoring the beauty of a brass stove, what is the best metal to make the tanks from?
My money is on plastic !!! no rust, no risk of sparks, easy and cheap to produce, so no need for repair..just replace it. And its light weight. Okay i know its not a metal !!!

There is some pretty heat resistant plastic out there, must be one that you could make a stove from I'd have thought?
George, a 6' stream of kerosene squirting out with the stove lit is actually pretty damn scary! Glad you and the property suffered no damage. (The house I mean)
For the pipe smokers out there, back some years ago you could buy plastic pipes, are they still made?
Hi Richard, Pipe smoking now seems to be a thing of the past....like sending small children up chimneys. I beleive that the "plastic" pipes actually had ceramic or pyrolytic graphite liners for the "fire-bowl" Best Regards, Kerophile
Well I've smoked a pipe since 1962 and pipe smoking is still alive and well...there are still specialist tobacconists...As I have no access locally to the tobacco I prefer I get mine from http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/ On a recent visit down South I met up with one of my brothers and friends I've known since the early sixties...as you can see from the photo a pipe and a pint (or five or six as the case was) was enjoyed by all!!!! Rob
In the UK there are no "celebrity" pipe smokers any longer, at least that I can think of. Today's focus on the celebrity culture amongst the younger generation might explain it. The last I can recall is the late great Eric Morecombe. Of course for the younger generation the ritual of filling and lighting a pipe would be far too much effort in a culture that demands instant gratification. Cheers, Graham.
My 2 pennies: I think the only humane way of dispatching foxes is a head shot with a rifle..instantaneous death. Sorry the photo is old...1971
hi Snowgoose i have no problem with foxes being killed or culled humanely to keep numbers down, and i have no problem with animals being killed/hunted for food (i've been honest in past posts, i used to be a slaughterman so i know how to kill an animal with out it suffering), it's chasing them with hounds and killing them for fun and doing it as an afternoons entertainment that i find disgusting, as for gassing them or baiting badgers and poisoning birds of prey i find that totally offensive, farmers might own the land the animals live on but that doesn't give them the right to kill every single one on their land, if it did we'd have no wildlife left in the UK, even Dartmoor and Exmoor are farmed and they are supposedly national parks unfortunately foxes badgers and birds of prey have no safe haven from the sicko's that get their kicks from tormenting and killing everything that is pretty and moves. imo the people that get their jollies this way are no better than the sicko's who mutilate horses not that i have heard of this lately but it's been in the news in the past and caused a public outcry, yet for some reason the pro hunt brigade can't see that the cruelty they dish out is no better than the bad old days of bear and bull baiting or the dog fights that are still going on illegally today if you are going to kill something then you do it as quickly and cleanly as possible to prevent undue suffering unless of course your a sadist in which case you should be behind bars to start with
Nice rifle there chap, left hander? The smock is good too, the originals fetch good money, I saw a Denison go for £275 about a year ago.
