I had my 96 out yesterday, made some tea at the park, there was a light breeze that was having a detrimental effect on the flame, I was able to rectify the problem somewhat using the inverted tin and my rucksack as a buffer to the wind. My Optimus 96 came with the three sided tin windshield that sits on wire legs, I find this design difficult to use in practice and I didn't bring it along. My question is,why are all the windscreens made for the 96 style stove some sort of folding device and not a simple one piece unit like on a 00 stove? I want to fabricate something to fit my 96 stove and a one piece device like on the 00 would be easier to make. Is there a good reason the windscreens for 96 stoves are made the way they are?
Hi, I believe that the traditional flat-folding windshields were made that way for a couple of reasons Cheap, and very compact, fitting easily into the stove tin. Homemade pricker & windshield Best Regards, Kerophile.
Yes, I love that brass primus two piece type, but I never see them available, original or new made. That style would be difficult for me to fabricate, im thinking of making a one piece type like on a 00 stove, I wonder why they were never made like that for the 96.
Primus only. They appear on the bay now and then. I've found needed parts by just buying another stove that had a defect or missing a part I didn't need. Took a few years to gather parts this way. Duane
Certainly worth chasing a windshield that works for you, I've always found the spirit cups of half pint stoves to have a very marginal capacity for single fill priming outdoors. I've yet to try the trick of adding a fibreglass wick, which might make things more practical but would make the stove less pretty. ......which is surely half the point of this size of stove!
