I had the same problem with Nova pump filter. I suspect it was old fuel from a rusted can. I tried it without the filter but the burner flame pulsed. Buying new repair kits just to replace the filter was too expensive. So, what I came up with is the Q-Tip solution. Here's how it works:

First break a regular Q-Tip in half.

Next unscrew the filter holder from the pump hose.

Use the Q-Tip to poke out the old filter (it's the perfect size for this)

Then pull off about half the cotton from the end of the Q-Tip and roll it into a ball.

Then poke the cotton ball into the filter holder using the Q-tip.

Then screw the filter holder back onto the pump hose and you're back in business.

I can't tell any difference between my cotton Q-Tip filters and the original Nova filters. The burner doesn't pulse, the cotton filters out extremely small particles, it requires no tools, and you can't beat the price!

    Hi, z1ulike,

Great solution, and low-tech, to boot!! Well done, and thanks for the "tip", pun fully intended! ;) 8)  I'll get me coat.... Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

P.S. I always have Q-tips in my kit, and now will use one, if it ever becomes necessary, for this repair. Thanks, again!
