Alan, re: "...or my stove isn't running right." Oh I do like boil tests… a stand alone 1 liter boil test out of wind to get idea re your Nova's performance, manufacture states 3.5 mins. [veteran fettlers remind us much is known just to look at flame and soot on pot ] ^^^^ that is heat source re "The burner is too far from the pan and some heat is lost,..." Heat loss: 1. a cooker "kit" all works together, burner is only one piece. Your kit as shown may never improve satisfactorily? The burner distance from bottom of pot is significant problem. 2. pot away from burner and also, the pot position, offset above burner, angled to direct/allow heat escape. 3. You did not mention outside temp or wind. Mother nature's radiant cold has the advantage. One needs to minimize surface exposure to the cold and maximize exposure to heat source. Center pot flat above flame as best as possible and 1 single wrap of aluminum foil should speed boil considerably, imo. In any wind or the colder outside the more important the wrap. quick *prototype: loose fit, heat flows all around, skirt hangs on 2 paper clips to hold in-place. *room for improvement but that's the concept. Skirt positioned higher might help some but I consider modern pots and SIGG windscreen: it seems most important, is bottom half of pot, that heat is: restricted / transferred below pan bottom and heat is directed up the sides.
All interesting ideas. I hope to make time on Saturday to try the 4.5 liter pot on the nova without the Trangia setup. It should boil just fine as we can get boils on a whisperlite which won't burn any hotter than the nova. If I have enough time I'll compare to my simmerlite and may fire up my 111B for comparison. Last weekend the air temperature was 37F and there was no wind to speak of.
The nova did boil the pan just fine. Since all this happened I sold the simmerlite and bought a dragonfly and a silent burner adapter. What I plan to do next year is to bring the dragonfly and use the nova pump to make a lap arctic conversation with a Trangia.
Thanks Alan for the report. Seems like the Trangia set-up was the problem, then. That’s strange. Your experience doesn’t exactly temp me to try a liquid fuel stove! I do occasionally run one of the Go System “Adapt” remote canister burners just for fun (no issues, performance has been good), but otherwise the standard spirt burner is my choice in a Trangia cookset. I also own one of the Trangia gel burners, but have never actually used it (gel fuel doesn’t appear to be especially common in Canada; if it is available, I’m pretty sure that it costs more than methanol).
In this case I think it's just too much water to boil with a burner too far from the pan. Using the normal sized Trangia pans which sit closer to the burner will likely work fine.
Morning, Alan (@alanwenker ), Yes, indeed, the Trangia pots and such work beautifully using a Nova in the proper adapter. Here's one I put together for CASG #7: This combination boiled water quickly, and also simmered delicately. I love it! This is the adapter I think is best. I have the other type, too, but like this one better, as it protects the aluminum windscreen from the burner's heat. Here, you can just barely see some onions, which we were grilling to go with some delicious burgers. And, the Trangia/Nova is doing a great job simmering the beans we enjoyed with this meal. Good luck on getting your own setup the way you want it. The entire KAP Arctic setup is a great idea, and one that is well worth some experimentation in getting it the way it best suits your needs. @Hazet Im pretty sure that cup is made by Primus not Trangia. Just in case folks having troubles searching for it. BTW, it seems it's always out of stock so leave yourself plenty of meat time. Cheers.
No, it's a Trangia originating item. First appearence was with the Optimus manufactured "Trangia Multifuel" unit, the one that preceeded the current "Multifuel X2" Due to the design it easily accepts both Optimus and Primus burners like the Nova / Polaris / Omnifuel etc etc... /Odd

Cant get hold of these anywhere or the trangia cup. Seems optimus discontinued the adapter and trangia have been out of stock for months of their cup. I have bought a optimus polaris and really want to hook it up with my trangia.
@Bennyburner, I have a Polaris in a Trangia 25 and you have to create quite the hole in the side to fit the valve. I'll try and upload a picture this weekend. I've not seen the Multi-Fuel Burner Adapter P/N 788205 for sale in years and could use another one myself. Mike
I may have a spare burner cup in a bucket of stove parts for ideas I've never gotten around to completing. If I can find it I will let you know.
