I have an Optimus stove that I purchased in 1976. It sat around for at least 20 years with some residual fuel in it. I tried to fire it up, and couldn't get it to start. I suspect that the fuel evaporated and/or degraded and left some gunk in the channels. Does anyone know a way to unclog it, and/or what solvent would be the best one to accomplish this?

    Hi Gerry.

It is an Optimus 99. I was using regular unleaded gasoline.

    Hi Bob,
Dump in some carb cleaner and let it sit awhile. Stick with Coleman in the future ! ;)

I would check the filler cap gasket to make sure it is still soft enough to seal. then make sure the jet is not plugged. Sloshing some carb cleaner around in the tank will help, too.

Unscrew the burner bell and remove the jet, a jet wrench is in the key. If you can see light through the jet, it's probably ok.

The 99 uses the same burner as the Svea 123, the Optimus 8R and 80 and the Primus 71. All these stoves run best on coleman type fuel. Automotive fuel will work after a fashion, but eventually gums things up and has all manner of noxious stuff in it that's healthful and nutritious for car engines, but not campstoves and campers.

The filler cap gasket is the culprit most of the time followed by a plugged jet. To clear the jet, you'll need a cleaning needle. If a proper one isn't at hand, a piece of .011 music wire will do nicely.

Let us know how you do.

    Hi Bob,

The fuel cap washer should be pliable. If it isn't a new washer will be needed.
