    Good work fellas
Tell your wives from me that you deserve "one" for doing such a good job.
Or at least a few more precious brownie points anyway.

    Update.

    Made a proto type burner
    70 high 65mm wide.
    burner oriface 18mm.
Hole 18mm in base and filled with rockwool leaving 18mm hole straight through.

Works ok. Nothing fantastic. Did initally make it 150 mm high now that hard draft effect going but won't retrofit in to anything Iv'e got yet.

With the small one burning I placed a small volume of air from the compressor around the inlet oriface.
    Awesome!!!!!
Bit of tweeking and you have a flame thrower blue hot flame. More of a blow torch than any thing.
    Work has begun
Bigger oriface may work better but unsure at this stage.
Will muck around some more perameters first.

    This is a fun project!!!

    Bruce.

Very nice and lovely looking stove there Rik
I see how the filler works now.
Is it all just crambed with kapoc / fibre glass/ to the top in the burner and does the bottom hole extend up slightly.
    Thanks for your troubles.
    You are making me jeleous.
    mrgreen
Things are moving slowly here at the moment but with a little progress.
It melts solder and aluminium brazing rods on the top of my proto type.
Looks like I'll have to go to brass and brazing.
But frist working out a few bugs just trying to get this right.
Will have trouble fabricating one up , probably look pretty ordinary but what the hell. Got to start somewhere.
This all seemed pretty easy 25 years ago.
Must have lost a few brain cells and skills along the way.

    Hey, Rik,

Do my eyes deceive me? Is that "Safe Fill" made of aluminum???!!!   If so, that's an outstanding idea!! How much does it weigh, compared to the plastic version? I've never seen one before, at least on any of the stoves I have on hand, but I very much like the idea of it!! Thanks for sharing the photo of yours! Is this the one you mentioned to me in yesterday's PM? VERY COOL!!! :D :D 8) 8) Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,

been there .. the top of burner laughs at solder...when the stove cools down ,youll hear the "escaped" solder rattle :D .
alu braze rods ... not an option ... they cost :( .
ive accomplished sealing the chimney with fire cement ..a generous fillet in the lid/chimney intercect . got some pics on the go ... will post after a much needed soak

    run out of meths again

    ..ablutted  ..
doc, rik , barra & others contributing.. thanks .. this ones got the old grey matter bubbling :) & i think its spreading to my hair ... the little thats left!.

ill stick my,previuosly, grey neck out here & guess that riks 81 predates docs .. the reasoning .. the ali fill tube .... check all the machining done on that .. inc screw cap & multi radial holes..
thats an expensive assembly ..use it for proto/development/first batches .. until the injection mould tool is made to rapidly( :- cheaply ) make the plastic version .
ali is not really the right material for alcohol /water...see corrosion on riks filler & old sigg bottles with "powdery" threads...... im of the mind that screw threads ,ali & spirits are poor bedfellows . the alcohol removes any lubrication from the mating surfaces & aluminium has little "built in" lube of its own ...result :-squeaky seized powdery threads .. as dry as a ...
    ..... add your own similie
    :D :D :D :D :D :D ... ok then a smiley will do .
im working with whats available .... last weeks lidl shop was ?56... im buying products ,soley for the container .... anybody got a cat that needs feeding up??. how many tins of prunes a day , before it gets dangerous??..why am i buying lift, firm & hold, spray in hair mousse ???? ....ive a no2 cut. watch e-bay for the 12 tins of anchovies ... bought in error.they didnt nest with the 175ml garam masala tin .... so to keep development costs down .(hence lidl).. theyre on the market ;)
having great fun this end .. often burning in to the wee hours ...fingers too press still un blistered ... now thats tempting fate :!:
puter chip heatsink fan provides a nice upwaft via bialaddin collar .
still hard at play with this lot ..but, ignition on hold, for lack of meths .

    PICT0866.jpg

i can still see carpet ....barefoot not reccommended

    PICT0862.jpg

also big thanks to dave shouksmith for heads up on 2kg fire extinguishers from lidl ...
.. the only reason i went in to my local .. for the first time ever ... gotta say ,, i like lidl.
.. those monster mackrel tins have gotta be useful for something .. at that price .. i buy two & figure out what for later ...
medicine ...... the doc thinks i might have got the dosage wrong ...

    nicksansmeths

To be honest  I have had a few tins in the cuboard for a couple of years, dam I must stop hoarding crap

    Hey, Nick,

After some thought, I believe that you may be right about Rik's aluminum "Safe Fill" being a possible prototype for the later plastic ones. I've only seen plastic versions, and that's even on the earliest models of the Trapper 81, one of which I have on hand. Makes sense to have some aluminum versions made up, to see how they work, then make molds of them, for the plastic ones. That would make Rik's VERY rare, me thinks!! Way to score, Brother Rik!!!! :D :D 8) 8) =D> =D> =D> Here's a photo of the regular, plastic version of the "Safe Fill" tab.

    DSCN2006.jpg

My only complaint about it is that it is not always easy to reseat the damned thing, after using the stove! But, if you lube it with lip balm, or maybe silicone, it works very well, and being plastic, should be much lighter than the alu version/prototype.

All I have time for right now. Talk later, and God Bless!

The filler was hand machined as a replacement for the broken original plastic filler, sorry chaps, not a prototype. It needs some new O rings, but I am looking forward to using it. As I am catering for Luke, me and a couple on non camper/stovies on the Shell Island trip, I may take the new Trapper with me as a big brew maker/stew simmer-er and leave my beloved Trangia + kettle at home :( Trust me when I say this is a one off job and will NOT happen again.

Cook kit for Shell Island, catering for four big lads will be

    Optimus Nova (thank you Charles)
Bulldog mess tins (Thank you Alan)
    Optimus Trapper (Thank you Neil)

If the newbies want to camp with us again (both are mates) then they had better get a Trangia + kettle each for the next trip, make men of them ;)

    Hey, Rik,

WAY COOL!!!! Whoever did the machining on that thing, did a fantastic job! You have every reason to be proud and happy of that little bit of machining expertise!!! Have fun at Shell Island, and I'll look forward to a complete report, and some outstanding photos, as usual!! ;) 8) :D Take care, and God Bless!

    "nipples"
Go to Dutch ovens and othe crap in the Clubhouse forum. posted an update for you.
Got stuck into that a few years ago.
Ended up with this in the end love it a lot.
Cheap stainless mixing bowls last about 3-4 years before burning out. Glows completely red
loaded up with charcoal and smells like a steam train.
Would post link but don't know how to. nor thumbnails. will learn to use this "pooter" one day.
Hows the ones with the pot supports go they look interesting.
Must be a Machinist only a machinist would look at something like riks filler and say nice job
good machining but the time and cost.

    Doc, Rik Everyone, Great stuff

Better post something for you all to see so as you don't think it's been a waste of time on your behalf . Well maybe it is.
You might feel so sorry for me that you send me one of your 81's and put me out of my missery!
Well just another 4 weeks or so and I'll get the 91
But hey more time to get it right then. :D

At the moment bit of a shame job but has potential. like the emergancy stove thingo.
With or with out the pipe a full burner will heat up and go fire ball.
Should post photo you would all love that.
So its rough and make shift but its a theory experemental thing at the moment not a real one.
    Finger in hole Simmer control

    Full blast no wind

Slight air flow with air compressor won't blow out cig lighter.
Course its better if you have the top sealed a bit
    airinject2.jpg

Sorry about the blurriness, but you get the general picture.
Now where near as productive as "brassnippless"
Better go I'm starting to ramble and the replys are getting longer.
Ohhh my god I'm turning into Doc
