yeah, much as I might like to do a meet in Oregon, I just can't burn that much time, and gas is going to be a whopper even if I took my car. Just filled up for $72, this week, joy.

The Flivvers in their juggernaut would probably cause the Arabs to go into paroxysms of delight.

We are busier than one armed paper hangers so time is of the essence. Couldn't take enough time to be worth the trip.

Will have to settle for pictures.

A local mini meet would be interesting.

I think I can get Sept. 1-5 off, dont't wanna hog all the time off at work. Save me enough room for a tent and a couple stoves.

    Morning, All,

Well, sometimes you have to take a bit of a drive, in order to have so outstanding adventures that you otherwise might not every enjoy!! Our Living History hobby has been that way, with us going back East for many years, so we can do what we do back where it really happened!! Same with backpacking trips. Seldom can someone just walk out their backdoor and go backpacking. (Well, we can, but that's a rather specialized circumstance, and you still have to thread a bunch of civilization needles before getting truly out on your own!) For our most enjoyable trips, we have to drive to places a bit removed from where we live.

Our Stove Gatherings are exactly the same, Gents. In order to have some fun, meet up with some outstanding folks who share your interests, and share this adventure in stoving, you will have to drive a big!! Aside from the one CASG that we put on just around the corner from our home, we've had to make a long drive to every single one of them! AND, they have all been well worth the efforts, and the cost of gas and other expenses!!!

The OSG is certainly no different. But, the difference is going to be in the stellar location that Gary has picked out for this Stove Gathering!! The PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), on which SB and I have backpacked many a mile, runs very close to the campground we'll be enjoying. And, Mt. Thielsen, the "Lightning Rod of the Cascades", is right next door, and well worth a climb!! So much to see, and so much to do, in addition to the stove fun, how can you NOT want to be there, Mates!?!?!! ;) 8)  :D/ :D/ :D :D Yes, we all will have to save up our pennies, and our vacation time, in order to be able to attend. But, hey, the planning is part of the fun, don't you think?! 8)  :D

In any case, don't miss out on what I truly believe will turn out to be a wonderful Stove Gathering!! If there is any way you can save up a bit of coin, and snatch a bit of time, please do make that effort. I am fairly sure you will not be sorry you did, Folks!! ;) 8) 8)  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Sweet Bride and I are really excited about this trip, and look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it, up in Oregon for the first every OSG!!!! Don't miss out, Mates!! Be there, or be square!! ;)    Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
Doc (who must now get his Cheerleader outfit cleaned and pressed, after all that jumping around....!)  8)

I was thinking I had not saved much this last year, but in checking, I'm up 3 grand more than last year towards a newer truck, just spent too much on stoves to have hit the goal I wanted to be at by this time. I won't be any good at work in August, I usually go on a backpack trip late July or early August for a week, so going to OR in early Sept. will be nice, so much time off in a short period of time. What will I do?:)

    Greetings, All,

Today, I hatched some fun for our OSG! I'm going to bring a few stoves, probably 4, or so, which I will give away, via raffle drawing, names picked from those who actually attend the Gathering! This will be fun, and I hope it might attract a few more CCS members to make the trip to join us in Oregon! I'm thinking that the stoves that are chosen, will be candidates for fettling, which we can do right there at the event. So, at least four folks will leave the event, with working stoves with which they did not arrive. No Optimus #9's, for those that might be hoping..... ;) ;) [-X [-X 8)  But, I'll choose some old favorites that should please those attending the OSG, and we'll all have a bit of fun in the process!! Make your plans to attend, now, Friends, and who knows, you might be one of the lucky winners!! See you all there, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

    P.S. Now..... which stove to choose for the raffle????!!!! :-k :-k :-k :-k 8) :D :D

    Hi everyone

I've been trying to figure what to say at this point that is about 4 1/2 months from the OSG. I think I have everything covered, but if I'm missing something, please give a shout out and let me know.

A big, giant THANKS to Doc Mark for his generous offer of some stovie door prizes. As usual, the man is a saint. Thanks Mark!!  :D/

Currently it's still pretty snowy up at the Lake. Fifty-two hundred feet and a better than average snow pack here in Oregon have combined to dissuade me from slogging up there to have a looksee for a bit of time yet. Here's a traffic cam photo of the intersection about a mile from the camp.

Anyway, if anyone needs answers please just speak up and I'll get to it ASAP.

Thanks! Looking forward to it. Should be a blast!

    Cheers,
    Gary

Gary, do you have some sort of head count, or are you going to do that later? Do we need to do anything at this time, like call up there? I reread the first posts a few days ago and nothing said about having to call if we are going to stay in the CG. Snow is about gone off my property at just under 4000'.

    Heya Duane
Well, I've got five campsites in the group camping area bought and paid for for the whole week. There's a two vehicle limit per site, so that's 10 vehicles and I was sorta figuring that would cover 20 peeps at a minimum.

I haven't really got a handle on the heads but I'd guess it's less than twenty at the moment.

Buuut, it's a point well taken. Howzabout everybody that's pretty serious on going just drop a PT to me. ?? I pretty much figure Doc Mark and Sweet Bride are coming. Me and Lovely Spouse, too. Most of the other fellers have been saying they'd like to but have been worried about the gas costs.

How bout it gents? Who's gonna join us? Let's call this the semi-official, four months to go sorta maybe head count.

We've got door prizes courtesy of Doc Mark and I'll bring the air-powered burner cleaner and some brazing gear. Plus, I still have all that wire and handle material from the CASG4 (that I didn't drag out due to the weather) which I'll bring along so folks can make their own prickers.

Plus, I guess I'll bring along some stoves I have that no one has seen yet. :o ;)

Do we need some sort of record-setting stove-burning-event like the fellows in the UK have enjoyed with their 111's?

Let us know. (My apologies if I'm being too unorganized on this.)

    Cheers,
    Gary

    Morning, Dawg, and All,

You are very welcome, Gary, for the stoves I bring to give away! It just seemed like a fun thing to do, so I'm makin' a list (and checkin' it twice!), and will have some fun stuff to pass along to those Stalwart Stovies who join us at the OSG!! Fun!! (And, I promise not to being "basket-case" stoves, but rather some fun ones that can be made perfect with just a little bit of fettling time and effort!)

I truly appreciate that you have undertaken to make this happen, Gary, and very much hope we have a fine turn-out for this event!! We SHOULD, with all the Stovies that live fairly nearby. But, as we've found out from all the CASG events we've done, some folks just don't attend such events, even if it's held in their own backyards!! :-k     But, I'm getting a good feeling about the OSG, that we may well have a great group in attendance!!!

I'm not sure if we can give our UK Brethren a run for their money with a 111 fire-up, but I'd be willing to bring some of mine for the effort, if everyone is on the same page for that attempt! I have a few that will have to remain unfired, unfortunately, so I can't bring them all. But, still, I have a "good many" user 111's, 111B's, 111T's, 22b's, a single 22, and a single 111C, that I'd bring up, if we all want to go for the record!!! (Don't think we'll beat our our UK Mates, though, as they DID have quite a few 111 type stoves in their world record setting attempt!! Pssssst: I hear they used smoke and mirrors and a bit of trick photography, to make it all come together, and that David Shouksmith provided most of the smoke, during his priming attempts!!!!!) :-$ :-$ :-$ :-$ ;) ;)

Again, many thanks for stepping up to the plate on this one, Dawg!! MUCH appreciated, and both SB and I are VERY much looking forward to the fun drive North, and to sharing this event with you, your Lovely Spouse, and everyone else that plans to join us in Oregon!!! Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

Dawd buddy, count me in on the head count.
Doc, will bring my only 111T for the burn. Yeah, I love the challenge to fettle a stove (if am not fishing in the lake nearby) plus love to cook up something in the outdoors that would invite even the tiniest creatures  Uhm. August :?: havent read most of the post but what would be the temps like at night me being a tropical guy?

    Hi gents
I neglected to mention and thank Steve (bajabum) for bringing some stoves for raffling, too. Thanks Steve! Looks like there is gonna be some good swag at the event for sure.

Duane, there are plenty of trout in Diamond Lake courtesy of ODFW. A license is necessary, I believe. A search on Diamond Lake Trout at Youtube will turn up plenty of good video of what sorts of catch is possible. I'm not a big fisherman, myself, though I'm considering bringing along my Popeil Pocket Fisherman just for fun. With all the stoves, it'd be fun to fry up some fish. And, apparently, this year due to holdover trout still in the lake, the ODFW has increased the daily limit to eight fish, with one allowable over 22 inches. See the announcement here:
    http://www.dfw.state.or.us/news/2011/april/041811.asp

Plus, just down the road a bit (Hwy 138) is the North Umpqua River which is a world class steelhead (oceangoing trout) catch-n-release flyfishing destination if you are of that persuasion. Those bad boys range from eight to fifteen pounds. Check out the Steamboat Inn via a Google search as this seems to be the place where the serious flyfishers congregate for more information.

Ron, on the temps, Laurie did a weather research project and found according to an 8-year summary of the historical records for the time period we will be there:
    Average highs: 70 deg F
    Average lows: 38 deg F
Extremes (as in the records during those eight years of weather records): 28 deg F to 90 deg F
Less than 10% chance of precipitation on any given day from the historic record during this period (Oregon's dry season).

So far, the response is coming in at about ten folks at this time. It's pretty early yet, though, so chances are good that number will increase.

Hope this helps and if you have more questions, just holler out.
    Cheers,
    Gary

Gary, thanks for the info on temperatures and fishing. Yeah I plan to fish. Will bring about 3 - 4 poles for those who want to try their luck. Have to check if they sell the license at the kiosk. Bring the mapp torch for some silbrazing fun. And Doc we discussed bringing some flint n steel for some fire starting. I wonder if they have fire pits so I can bring firewood.

Well, I've got my wife to agree to go camping -- in July. Our church group is sponsoring a camping trip. This will be her first ever time camping. If (that's a very big if) she likes it, maybe I can convince her that ORSG1 would be fun...
