HJ, for her to agree you need to rent an RV so the little one can sleep well as well as your wife. Ron
Heya HJ Wishing you luck on the pre-OSG camp experience since we'd really, really love to see you and the fam at the OSG. Ron, we're 99% sure the campsites have fire rings for wood fires. Can't say I've ever been at a camp in Oregon that did not. So, plan on bringing the wood. The only issue might be if there are no-fire restrictions due to dryness. But, since we've had a bigger than average wet year and the temps have stayed cooler than usual this Spring, I'm thinking we should be good for campfires. Cheers, Gary
If I bring my Toy, I can haul some firewood up. I only have a two or three year supply in my yard. Duane
Boy, there's a flashback to the 70's! I may try a bit of fishing myself, I just picked up a nice Optimus 145 Smoker, and it needs a couple of trout... I plan on bringing some wood too. Umm... Oregon is discouraging bringing in wood from other areas,as there is a huge pine beetle infestation and they're trying to control it. Just check it for bugs ! Also I wouldn't plan on taking any wood back south, you might have hitch-hikers
I think CA is more worried about bugs coming in than OR is of bugs coming in. I was thinking of that too. With the truck, we could secure some on the way in off of FS land. Pinedale WY was hit pretty bad where I went backpacking last August. Duane
Yeah, I hadn't thought of the bug thing. Sorry 'bout that. Good call Baja. And, there's an Invasive Aquatic Species permit required for boats ten feet or longer in Oregon now. In case anyone is bringing a boat for the lake. I think it's $7 and good for the rest of the year. And, you can't boat or swim in or on nearby Crater Lake. Water quality issues. If I think of anymore such things, I'll post back. Cheers, Gary
Morning, All, Sounds like it's shaping up to be a fine event! And, yes, Baja did mention bring some stoves to raffle, as well, and good on Ya', Steve!! I'm sure it will be fun for all!! Ron, I don't remember talking about flint and steel fires at the OSG. When did we discuss that? SB and I are not really that much into fires in camp, as we enjoy our stoves, heaters, and such, and have no need for a campfire. Plus, flying sparks and nylon/polyester tents don't get along very well!! We've seen several tents that were severely damaged by such sparks melting flies and tent bodies!! Something to consider, I guess.... But, if someone wants to have a fire, I say, have at it. We won't be bringing, nor buying, any wood, however, and would rather just enjoy the burning devices we're bringing to use. Probably won't do any fishing, either, although both of us like doing such things. I'd LOVE to bring some pistols, and go plinking!!! 8) 8) BUT, I'd bet the Rangers, and possibly other campers, might not like that idea!! So, alas and alack, we won't be bringing anything with which to plink. Maybe at the first ASG (Arizona Stove Gathering) we can set it up for that sort of recreation, with utmost safety in mind, of course! 8) SB and I will be bringing some books to enjoy, if we feel motivated to read them, and she will definitely be bringing some knitting, and other such things that she loves to enjoy! We're looking forward to seeing you all in Oregon for this fun event!! YIPPEE!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Doc, remember when I was still learning to use flint and steel. You mentioned that we could do some exercise in practicing the use of flint and steel to make a fire....not to keep the fire burning of course...more on methods to create a fire. You were going to show me the proper way to strike steel on flint. Anyway, it was just a thought. Ron
Hey, Ron, Yes, you are right! I had forgotten about that! Sorry, getting old and forgetful(er)!! Yeah, as it gets closer to time for the OSG, please remind me about this again, and I'll toss in some goodies from my flint and steel kit, and we'll "play" at making a good little fire in a proper 18th century manner! Thanks for reminding me of our talk, and see you there. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Doc, include me in the lesson too. This winter I pickup a striker and the rod, but don't think it is the way you are going to go about it. What I have is very easy to even light alcohol. Duane
Hey, Guys, Sounds good, Duane. In fact, if there is enough interest in such a thing, I'll do a short seminar on how to use a proper flint and steel to start a fire. I can bring some assorted and proper, period correct strikers, so that each person can try their hand at learning this skill, but these will be loaners, only, unfortunately, as all will be coming from my period kit. I'll bring char cloth, which I cooked myself, and also the making so that others can see how it's done, either over a fire, or a campstove, both work very well. And, I'll bring the rest of the stuff needed to make a good fire when in a survival situation, with flint and steel. Please let me know who might be interested, and I can be sure to seek out enough materials for everyone to borrow for their practice. In fact, I am going to contact Sparky, in Texas, and see if he might be interested in making some proper 18th century type strikers for those who might wish to purchase one. I'll see what he says, and how much he would charge to make such a high carbon steel striker, done in a period manner. Again, please let me know who might be interested, and I will make sure that everyone gets stuff with which to play. Fun!! Thanks for asking Ron and Duane, and I look forward to see if there are any other Pyros in our group! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc P.S. Just sent a note to Sparky, and asked him about this. So, again, please let me know if you would be interested in buying a good and proper striker from him. If he's up for it, he will let me know what each one will cost. I don't think it will be too expensive, and more than worth whatever he asks, I'm sure. A while back, Sparky made and sent me a very nice little hand forged steel knife, that he made on his forge. He's a very good Blacksmith, and that little knife is a gem, indeed. I KNOW he would do a fine job on making a good, high carbon steel striker, for those of us who would want one. I will certainly buy one from him, and add it to my kit!!
Please do so legally, though. Thanks. 8) http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/umpqua/forest-products/firewood.shtml Cheers, Gary
Morning, Guys, As you may have seen in the Lounge thread about this, Sparky has already blacksmithed a very nice little high carbon steel striker for my flint and steel fire starting demo at OSG!! Great job, Sparky!! I'm going to test it, and report here as to how it works, though I have a very good feeling that it will through a super hot shower of sparks, when used with a good flint!! In any case, Sparky and I will keep working on this, and for those that would like a good PROPER striker for their emergency kit, I think this little guy from Sparky will be just the ticket!! At OSG, I'll tell you about the rest of the items you will need, all of which you can easily make, or gather, for yourself. In truth, a good flint and steel kit is much better than matches..... I'll tell you why, at the OSG!! 8) Take care, Lads, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hey, Ron, "Jute/rope/cord" is for rank amateurs, Mate!! I'm going to teach you the PROPER way to make a fire, with a REAL flint and steel kit!!! Works like a champ, and for lots of reasons, too!! I'll bring everything necessary for you guys to learn and to play, AND I'll teach how to make and gather the proper makings for good, trustworthy, and workable flint and steel kit!! HINT: The first thing you will need is one of Sparky's little strikers!!! 8) 8) When I report back about how it works, you can decide and then talk to Sparky about this. But, I have a feeling it will be absolutely perfect!! We'll have a fun time at OSG learning this old-fashioned skill, that still comes in handy, even in this modern age! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Evening, Ron, I've never gotten into the bow fire thing. Flint and steel works so very well, I've not felt the need for it. But, the good thing about that method is that you can, basically, be without ANYthing, and still cobble together a bow and drill for fire making. Hummmm.. I new skill to learn, I guess....!! 8) Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Got approved for vacation time that weekend, should be there Wednesday I think, leaving home that morning in N CA, about four hours from the border, unless I stop to see Jim from a bp forum I belong to. Then will be Thursday for sure. Duane
