Greetings, All, For those of you that happen to own a Phoebus #30 stove, many of you may be like me, in that your reserve fuel tank cap is missing. One of the neatest features of that neat little stove, is the threaded boss on one of the legs, which provides a home for that cap. If you want a Phoebus #30 reserve fuel tank cap, Exeter_Yak has graciously offered to give reproducing them a try. Mac (Arch) very kindly offered to allow his own reserve cap to be the test and measuring sample, and when I talked to Doug the other day, he said he was ready for Mac to send him the cap. I'll drop Mac a note, just to apprise him of the current situation, and hopefully, with Doug's hard work, and Mac's generous loan of a sample cap, those of us who need such a device will have one of Doug's outstanding creations to fill taht need!1 I'm ordering one, or maybe two, just in case! If you, too, need such a clever little device, please jump on this bandwagon, Friends! Doug's work is beyond compare, and every single thing that he has made for me has been simply outstandingly crafted, and worked better than brand new!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hey, Mac, I was just going to send off a note to you, and VOILA, there you are!! I'll send Doug's address, as it's probably best for you to send it to him, directly. As this is a favor you're doing for me and the rest of the needy #30 owners, please allow me to pay for the Postage. Thanks, again, for generously loaning the template part, so that Doug can do his wonderful magic for any #30 owners that need that scarce little cap! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hey, Guys, Just time for a quick on, as dinner's on the stove: Mac, and any others that have a Phoebus 30 with the reserve cap insitu. Does that cap screw directly into the threaded spot on the leg, or is a "boss" needed, which you thread onto the leg, and THEN install the cap? I cannot get to my own 30 right now, but I'm thinking it looked more like the cap just threaded right onto the spot for storage. Thanks for any help you can offer, Gents. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Evening, Mates, Belay that last request, as tonight I answered my own question. I did a few hours of digging around in the Hobbit Hole, and found my own Phoebus 30. For mine, there is no boss at all, and the burner attaches to the font in the normal way. The cool thing is that the INSIDE of the burner attachment area is also threaded, as well as the outside!! Cool! I had thought that I remembered it being that way, but could not remember for sure. A very good friend told me that his #30 had a boss, and so I was thinking that my memory was faulty. In this single case, it proved to be on the money.... but, don't get your hopes up for future such performance! 8) So, at least for my own Phoebus #30, the reserve cap has male threads, and threads into the inside of the burner boss, itself. How about the rest of you? I can take and post photos, if that would help anyone see what I'm talking about here. Thanks, very much, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
On mine, the reserve cap has male threads, and screws directly to the threaded hole in the leg. ....Arch
Morning, Mac, Many thanks! Yours and mine are the same, so Exeter_yak can make caps that will fit all stoves like ours. I will contact my buddy, a fellow CCS member, and see why he thought his was different than ours, as I do believe that ours are the regular Phoebus setup. Maybe his is an earlier, or later specimen, and they changed to a different setup. In any case, I'm tickled that yours and mine are the same, as your cap is going to be the model for the caps that Doug crafts! Cool! Thanks very much for the info, and also for sending your cap to him, so he can do his magic on making more of such things!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hi Lance, Maybe some, but the Optimus 00 arrangement has changed over the years. The reserve cap on my 00 is female, and stores on the end of the pump handle when not capping the tank. The Phoebus #30 reserve cap is male. As Doc mentioned, the tank opening is threaded on both its outside (to accommodate the burner) and inside (for the reserve lid) surfaces. ....Arch
Evening, Lance, Mac, and All, Lance, Arch is right. I have quite a few 00 stoves, dating back to the 1930's, and none of them use the same reserve cap as the #30 Phoebus. This is a completely different animal, with no doubt. When everything is done, and the caps are returned, I'll take photos and post them here. But, unless your Optimus 00 has the burner boss threaded on the inside, this cap is not going to work for your stove. I really look forward to seeing what Doug creates in this project. I already know that it will be just like all the other fine items he has created: FANTASTIC!! Lance, if you can take a photo of your burner boss, and your burner threads, and post them here, we can show you why the cap that Mac has sent for a template, will not work on your 00 stove. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hi, If you study the photos in these two threads you will see the arrangement for the reserve cap and parking boss used on the Phoebus No.30 stoves: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/5307 https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/10656 Best Regards, Kerophile.
Hummmm, interesting?? my reserve cap is just like the one on my two 00's. I wonder how this could have come about. When i get home i will have a good look at my fittings and see if i can deduce how it should have happened. Another interesting fact; the burner/riser tube assembly also is interchangeable. At least on mine that is. Stoves, curoiuser an' curoiuser lance
I guess your reserve cap belongs to an Optimus 00 is the reason why, Lance. Here's my Primus late-model 210 tank (by which time the model had adopted distinctly Optimus 00 characteristics) alongside that of my Phoebus 30 Here's the reserve cap of the Phoebus, parked in its unique leg/pan support brace housing Here's the reserve cap of the Primus, embellishing the pump knob Now over to the Phoebus tank, location of the reserve cap, screwing into the tapped hole of the tank's burner mounting boss Same Phoebus tank, with the Primus reserve cap screwed onto the male threads of the burner mounting boss - yes, same thread as on the Primus Just to confirm, here's the Phoebus burner mounted on the Primus tank Lance posed a bit of a mystery, here's mine. This set of parts was hitching a ride in the Phoebus 30 tin box It assembles ... ... to make this I'm thinking, given the carbon crust here and there, that it's a solid fuel tablet burner/stove for Esbit or Meta fuel. I guess I've not been in Stove Land long enough but I've not seen this type before. Go on, tell me it's a candle holder! Cheers, John
I wonder if that was deliberate -- i.e. maybe the stoves were (at some point) designed to use the same burner? John, the cutouts on that assembly look distinctly "burner-shaped". Does it fit over the burner? ....Arch
Until i saw, (have now seen), a proper Phoebus 30 reserve cap i thought you were all out of it. You were not, I was. I dare to ask forgiveness??????? lance Arch, that has me wondering if perhaps it is a pan support for a small cup/pan for a single cup of joe or tea. Regardless i'd really like to have a tracing of it so that i could make some. Meta tabs perhaps. Or hex tabs. Cool, regardless. Thanks everyone for setting me straight. Now i have to enter my name in the list, well to the back i might add, of folks Master fettler, Sir Exeter_yak, make me a proper reserve cap. lance
That was my initial train of thought too, Arch, but no, it doesn't fit. Then I thought, would a (smaller) Primus 71 burner basket fit? It would be handy to have a separate pan support without needing to return the stove to its box. No, doesn't fit either, and that's how I reasoned that it could be a solid fuel tablet stove. Regarding the interchangeability of burners on the Primus and Phoebus. I doubt it was intentional, but simply the use by two unrelated factories of a favoured thread size for European and Scandinavian stoves. Regards, John
Sure thing, Lance, first opportunity I get, PT and maybe a post on CCS for anyone else. All the best, John
