Here is the Phoebus #28 Meths burner I got earlier this week. You can see it is used but in good condition. I will clean up the burner and priming pan and polish the tank. I may or may not paint the frame. As you can see, the priming pan is big and creates a real event. It burns quietly and has pretty good flame control for a meth burner.
Hello Sparky. I do like those meths stoves and find them a real pleasure to use. They are great for gentle cooking and are easy to use for those that fear, or are not familiar with pressurised stoves. Cheers, John
Hi there sparky well done on a great score i agree with you being as it is in great condition i would just give it a full fettle and clean and polish the tank as you mentioned and leave the paint as it is as it is in quite good condition may be just treat the few rust spots to stop any spreading
As I was sanding out the little rust spots, I kept finding more rust spots. And the back side was in much worse condition. I sanded the rust out and decided to repaint it although I really didn't want to. I found a light metallic blue automotive paint that is chemical resistant and good for 650F. Photos when I put it all back together.
Here is the restored stove and I have to admit I am not happy with it. I would have preferred to either leave it un-painted or find a paint that matches the original color. There was just too much rust to leave it un-painted in Houston. Such as it is:
UPDATE: I used that black BBQ pit paint that is good for up to 600F on the pre-heat pan. Big mistake. It is resistant to the heat but not flaming alcohol. I stripped it down to bare metal and repainted it with the automotive engine block paint I used on the frame. After you bake that stuff it is heat and chemical resistant because of the ceramics that are part of the paint formula.
John, I re-assembled the burner cap to exactly the same place it was for the last umpteen years (the brass tube is well marked) and it burns same as before my fettle. I plan to play with the adjustment just a little bit since there is a 1/2" long tube that injects the vaporized alcohol into the burner cap and I am curious how the position of that injector may affect performance. I can adjust the burner cap along the vaporizing tube and move the injecter in or out of the cap. More news as it happens.
