I recently got this 1940's Preway P4521 camp stove and I used it this past weekend. I would like to continue to use it, but it does need some fixing. My main question is, where would I be able to get a new cooking/pan grate? I have noticed that if you are boiling water or need hotter heat that the bars that are above the burner get red hot. After years of this they have gotten quite warped and brittle. I tried to straighten the one, but it started to crack so I stopped. I would like to replace the grate with a new one and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get one or have one made? I live near Edmonton Alberta. Thanks for the help.
I would suggest taking your old grate to any welder and asking if they can make you a new one. ….Arch
Took and sent an email off to a local welding business with pictures and measurements to see if they could make a new one/what the cost would be. If they can't I'll ask them what it would cost to fix. The nice thing is, it looks like this cooking grate is very easy to fully remove without having to wreck anything!
Do you think that a smith, using their anvil, could straighten the rods of you stove? I've used that method. It also looks like the situation might have been cause by high heat for a longer period of time, under a large, reflective pot, creating temperatures that exceeded the design specs. for the grill.
I've had a couple of those preway wedges and if used much they all get warped. Not really enough grate material.
I know one rod for sure would need to be replaced as it has become quite brittle from all the heat/cool cycles in has been through. I'm just waiting to see how much it would cost for a new one to be made. The grate should be able to handle it though. I know if you are boiling water for doing dishes I use a large pot on high heat, when using the toaster that goes over a burner you need to use high heat or it takes forever to get the bread to toast.
I noticed it as well on my thermos stove, that since I have been using it, one of the bars seems to be getting a tiny bit warped. I haven't noticed it on my Coleman propane stoves though. Maybe they use a different type of metal?
