Sorry, I meant perpetrated. I believe there was a long standing feud between Mormons (Utah) and some of her neighbor states, but I'm not sure of the history there. And upon a bit of research (been a while since I read the book), apparently few if any Missourians were involved, just Arkansa families in that battle (+ Natives, allies with the Mormons).

Way off topic now, but here's info on the subject: Mountain Meadow massacre

Charcoal starter fluid is basically a petroleum distillate or Stoddard solvent. Probably it will burn in a stove but it isn't priced any lower so why not just use kerosene?

    Ray

PS: If Mudzoory is not in the US use caution. Some countries may have alcohol based charcoal lighter fluids.

The bottle of charcoal lighter I have is described on the label small print as "naptha".

That surprises me because naphtha is basically petrol - and they're always warning people not to start barbeques with petrol. One presumes it's a very wide use of the word 'naphtha'.

I've been using barbeque lighting fluid for years in my lamps, lanterns and stoves. It does seem to be white spirit (=Stoddart solvent), essentially equivalent to paraffin (kerosene).

Yes, it's expensive but the time to buy it is when the likes of Wilkinson's want to clear their shelves of the summer stock to make way for the Halloween and Christmas shite tat stuff. How much they have left at the end of the season depends on how bad the summer's been...

And on the other sub-topic; ah yes, religion - always a good excuse for a punch-up. It's very sad, IMHO, that the bigots can always find something in their own particular version of the 'good book' to justify their excesses...

Yes, I was considering using it in place of unleaded in a petrol burner!

Obviously the brand, it was cheap from H&M or similar. Would provide a pic of the label but SWMBO tells me it's in the shed at my Mum's.

Frg, perhaps you're getting charcoal starter fluid mixed up with lighter fluid? Lighter fluid is naptha based and I have heard of it used in a 123 or 8R. It's inexpensive and comes in a small container perfect for a weekend.
With coleman fuel and kerosene readily available at a reasonable price I haven't needed to experiment with alternative fuels.

I'm sure it works well. I used gasoline for decades before recently switching to kero.

Will grab it the next time I'm over in Mum's and get a pic of the advice section of the label.

Potato Land is Idaho and Coffee Town is Seattle, Washington (pretty sure). Next door to one another. Mudzoory is a few states away to the East.

2 1/2 gallons clear kero here in Potato Land is about 23.00 US

When I said they were right next to each other, I wasn't meaning geographically...

I took David's explanation to point out what colorful (imaginative) names some citizens use to describe a (their?) state. For someone not as familiar with their non-official names it's always good to have Glossary of Terms.

Coffeetown = Seattle because of Starbucks (home planet) I presume.

Coleman Fuel can be found on sale the odd place. Le Baron's (outdoor store) had 1 gallon at 1/2 price earlier this year - $10. I picked up 4 gallons. Sadly most is still unused, I've been shunning it in favor of her cousin kerosene (not as volatile / more of it / using stoves designed to run kero / using indoors ).

Ray, Exactly, charcoal lighter fluid is a low grade kerosene with some additives, I believe. Actually I don't care what's in it. Just curious about it. Four quarts would be about 8 bucks.

SMolson, Mudzoory has a rich Mormon history, pun intended, not getting to deep into the subject mind you. Like just about everything on this planet of interest I've studied the Mudzoory Mormons some. Traveled the Mormon road near where I live and up and down and across also. Been to Nauvoo and looked around. Read the Book of Mormon. You get the idea.

I don't know if the Mormons of old used kerosene?

Well, I stuck my foot in it again, charcoal starter fluid and cigarette lighter fluid are both naphtha. I gotta pay more attention. How about that MSDS Petroleum Naphtha.

Mudzoorians have all sorts of names for their neighbor states and the nice people who reside therein, and I'm sure our neighbors have some interesting names for us.

P.S. I wrote a lot more about the subject but edited it out, decided to keep my mouth tight and behave myself. I enjoy the CCS forum. Don't want my stove smashed. I'm an amateur linguist so all things to do with names and such is of interest to me.

Umm, isn't lighter fluid butane? Or does that depend on the lighter? I refill my Brunton (torch lighter) with butane. I just assumed it was in those Bic-type spark/flint lighters as well.

Edit: Tks Monkeyboy. And yes, best save that other information for the Lounge (or PM!). We have small settlements of Mormons here in Canada too. Of interest to those who study such things (evolution of religions) because it's relatively new age-wise, is in our own backyard with a known, well documented history.

Pour a little in a metal dish and try and light with a match. If its the stuff I would call bbq lighter fluid it will not ignite unless you give it something as a wick. This should work OK in kero stoves If its what I would call naptha then it will light before the match reaches the surface and be all gone in seconds. Best to try this outside. Could be ok in white spirit stoves but depending on purity it may block jets etc.

Kerosene in 32oz. bottle at Megalo mart is $5.49.

@$4.70/gal. I think I'll stick with my local MFA co-op.
