Whilst one might tend to think it might, I have carried this out myself in the dim and distant past on a number of stoves without issue in that regard.
Certainly a diy work-around for one-off tank repairs in cases when required for restoration, but can't see as practical on an industrial production scale on terms of either labour or energy costs
I reckon so. Re quality control - knowing the production year may help the manufacturer retrospectively identify a production problem if that info is fed back from agents & distributors - tied in maybe with archived material regarding supply & batches of brass sheet. On the scale they were producing it's unlikely it'll nail any quality issues down to one workstation although the later stampings with the extra characters may refine the code to that level.

Primus mastered all involved (sides too) by 1900, no stress cracks, beautiful lettering & logos... explosion-proof. It was still done w/same design much the same way (as far as i know) in 2000, amazing.

I wonder if Mike from Base Camp (@Mike the stove) knows if Manaslu emboss their stove’s tank’s in situ with the pressing operation by using an integral raised die? For me, to allow the lettering to flow evenly across and around the tank without any distortion or misalignment, I believe Primus would have incorporated a raised die in the pressing process of the tank rather than first emboss/stamp into flat brass pre-cut sheet. Primus introduced what I term as a ‘number identifier’ (sitting directly underneath the year of manufacture code) in 1922 which I understand ceased in 1956. This number identifier ranged from 1 - 39 (no other number higher than 39 has ever been found on a Primus stove). This means that over a 34 year period and millions of product output, there was absolutely no change in the range of the number identifier. Meaning that despite the growth of the factory over these years and with this, an increase in work force, the factory kept rigidly to this 1 - 39 number identifier range. IMO, there is an intentionally implied significance by Primus in that the number identifier is directly tied to the date of manufacture, due to both being enclosed by a circular stamping on the bottom of each stove. Given there is a consensus agreement that quality control was a very high priority for Primus (no doubt to ensure continued competitiveness for year on year increases in market share - which ultimately spanned across 10 main export markets comprising of around 126 countries) it would make sense that Primus would need to be able to link back to any quality control related issues that were highlighted to them by those markets. But to do this, they would need to know the year of manufacture and the core assembly workstation which produced that product in that particular year. A core assembly workstation number identifier would also serve the following purpose - to confirm workstation productivity output which can then also be used for possible payroll (piece-rate payment) purposes? Circling back to the fact that Primus did not expand the range of the number identifier from 1-39 over the 34 years they exclusively used this, makes sense to me if it is considered that these numbers relate directly to a grid of core assembly workstations - whereby there may have been a physical limitation in terms of factory space to be able to increase this number when Primus seriously expanded production in the late 1940’s, which is a possible reason they apparently introduced a two-shift system around that time. Why no photo evidence of core assembly workstation numbers? Possibly part of company policy of trade secrecy if photos were to be published to the public ? Some photo’s showing some kind of workstations in my opinion do appear to be ‘stage managed’ and ‘posed’. Anyway-how, that’s my penny’s worth as far as the mystery ‘number identifier’ is concerned - all conjecture on my part and nothing (at the present time at least) conclusively provable unfortunately. I concede Phareal, Tony & others could be more qualified than I on-topic and we may yet hear/learn more. I cant explain but i rejoin the position that the lettering was not stamped into flat sheet, but, not for reason "...to allow the lettering to flow evenly... without any distortion or misalignment". Myself I wouldnt expect the sheet, when in the stamping machine, to be able to misalign ("imo", to shape-stamp a flat sheet that already had it's letters in-place is "not a problem", yet "I" very much doubt it in this case). I do have limited experience, in the 70s, with huge equipment, punch press to punch holes in sheet and as next step stamping to shape the same flat sheet.
