My conclusion is certainly different than yours. I would encourage anyone with a Coleman stove to remove the needle and see how it operates!!
And you’re conclusively right! My apologies for contradicting. I conducted a further experiment, thinking that maybe removing the metering rod would have disrupted fuel flow past the control spindle tip, so I created a stubby rod out of brass, unthreaded but a tight enough fit in the spindle for the purpose of the test. The result? The burner flame was controllable down to a simmer but as in my video, the simmer wasn’t as good (steady) as with the metering rod installed. So, I’m munching on humble pie! In my defence, what I think happens is that the control spindle does the bulk of the work of regulating the flame (more than just an on/off) and the adjusted proximity of the pricker needle to the jet orifice at a simmer setting at the valve fine-tunes the flow. Can you look at that end again? There might be enough pricker sticking out to unsolder (if it is not crimped) and pull it out. You can file a point on the end. I have done that a few times in the past.
