Nice spirit-cup mod! These are effective heaters especially when you're hard up & saving on fuel bills but get free paraffin! Wonderful smell.

    Really nice, Henry. :D
I have an R55 that I recently purchased that will chase me out of my garage if the day is not too terribly cold. How hard is it to get mantles on your side of the pond. :?: Just in case I am a tad clumsy.;)

    Brass tank yes.

The spirit cup mod was on the heater when I bought it, it's a home made affair but works just fine.
About the smell, I lit it up yesterdasy morning in the conservatory to take the 'after' photo and got a tad previous with the lighting, up comes a small yellow ball of flame, oops.
From the kitchen comes a little voice, 'bloody stink'

The mantle is a wire one that I got from an ebay trader, cost me 14 quid (about $25) they're about the same price from base camp I believe.

    Morning, Henry,

Outstanding job on your R1!! Now, look what you've done, though.... Now, I have to go out and dig out my own R1, and see about getting it running, like yours! Damn, you, Man....and Bless you, too!!! :D ;) ;)

I have no idea which model R1 I own, as I got mine at a swap meet, back in the 1980's. The asking price was only $8.00, and I believe I offered the seller $6.00, and he took it!! 8) Anyway, it came with all the paperwork, and I seem to remember that it was complete. But, now I have to go and SEE!! :D

Again, fine job of fettling and beautifying your R1!! Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc Mark

    Nice job...

I see you changed the guard. What did you use to finish it? If it's painted, presumably it withstands the heat...

    Cheers...

It seems to be standing up to the job, although I haven't had it alight that much.

    The paint I used was 'plasti-kote METALLIC 621/451 Silver' from B & Q

I'll be bringing it along to the gathering so you'll be able to see it then.

Excellent R1. I too have one, problem is I need a vaporizer tube. I am not sure which model tube it uses, 606 or 169. Mine is the same as the model you have posted here. Thanks for your help. PS, where do I get one?

I think I answered this one before, Rob. It's a 169 vaporiser you want and they're obtainable through the site sponsors, base-camp. About ?15 as I recall...

OK,thanks henry. Is there a site on these so I can read up on them?
I seen one for sale here but the reflector was copper???Were the early ones copper or has the chrome worn off? It's also missing the guard.

If I could grab one for a good price I would love one. After seeing your effort I recon I could make a new guard and get the old girl going.

I'm not an expert but I think you're maybe spot on about the copper ones being early models.

The picture of Henry's heater (radiator) is what I call a later model. The earkier ones had a copper reflector, also was lackered over brass fount .
You mention on on ebay , were you talking about Aust Ebay. If so this is one of the verry early ones. It has a brass knob on the valve / pricker, after this they had the normal black knob. Also has a name plate on the bottom of the reflector. Nice looking heater both of them Henrys also the one on ebay. (I was temped to place a bid) but I have a heap of them. The only thing that buggers up is the 160 generator and a few seals.
Kayen coppied the Tilley heater as well both are identical to look at. 90% of parts is interchangable.
You didn't say how many you wanted.
I make my own mantles for them.
