Hmm, I suppose I'd better use lead solder then, I must say that I love Silver Solder, -always flows into a joint better, for me anyway.
Should I use rosin-cored solder? or roofers solder? (don't know what grade it is. I guess testing is the answer).

 

It will be easier in this case to stick with what the manufacturer used and soft solder the joint. The only silver soldered parts on these stoves were the burners. Unless you fully disassemble the joint and remove all trace of soft solder, you'll end up with a contaminated and inferior silver soldered joint anyway.
The rosin cored is likely to be a better bet than roofer's solder.

 

Yes I suppose it's easy enough to try to clean up the joint without disassembling and attempt to re-solder it.
I have a small gas torch with a nice fine flame (used for jewellery) that should do it.
