The slight depression in the burner plate makes for a nice place to fill with a spot of fuel and light to preheat the generator tube, for VERY cold weather. It also helps for those of use crazy enough to burn kero in one of these stoves. Murph
Thanks for the info on the artic conditions feature of the 502. That one seems obvious now or possibly an adaptation of the depression that keeps the rings in place. Here is where i'm at now with the one piece model. I've got the original bowl shape but still need to add the orifice holes for the fuel exit. Somehow I need to figure out what open area the waffle design on the original has and add holes to match the area. Although the model looks thick in this scale, walls are only .0625" (1.5mm) as the original was to keep weight to a minimum. Thanks all for the feedback. This is the type of info I was looking for.

Great stuff an interesting thread which I'll follow with interest. But I must admit, I'm a little curious how much does this process cost once you've supplied your CAD drawing ? ( Generally speaking, not necessarily your component) I guess this type of company charge by the components weight perhaps ? I ask because I know what it would take to make via 'Murphs' option, I have CNC and a little experience with spinning. Cheers
yes, the charge for the metal laser sintered part is based on the material choice and then calculated by the volume of the part CAD model. The companies who make these try to maximize the parts in the machine while paying attention to build orientation of each part depending on that parts specific geometric features. I too know this can be done by CNC lathe and then spin welded or conventional welded. But, then we wouldnt be discussing this in the forum would we?
Actually, I was thinking of machining the part in two pieces, shrink fitting one to the other with NO welding, and be done with it. It almost sounds like you're all but in love with the 3D laser/sintered metal process. Yea, it works, but is it the best for the job at hand? Or is it a matter of not having the machinery at hand to produce that parts you want made? It all reminds me of a old Jewish proverb, "Better is the enemy of good enough." This method might work very well. We have one member here and one ex-member making caps commercially for classic kero burners by this method and in reality they work well and its an economic method. I don't really know the 502 but from the ones I've seen the burner body appears to be cast so metal printing is a valid way to go and would be hard to distinguish from the original but the top plate and curly washers are stamped and not much different to modern Colemans. Maybe these should also still be stamped. Maybe the modern ones fit?
Some progress here. I modeled the waffle part simply with lots of holes. I'll try some other hole patterns but think this is looking good.
Modeled a couple more versions. I'll have to prototype some with smaller and larger holes to check the performance. And another
i have read that putting a couple more waffle and flat washers in some Colemans improves them . maybe another row of holes ?? kerry
Kerry, good point. I noticed some extra room below the generator so I did extend the height of the ring which gives it another row of half circles. The pictures I posted show the extra height.
i don't own a 502 so i wasn't sure how many holes and i didn't count them on my 500 or my 533 but i am going to try some extra washers out of curiosity. i just need to find time. kerry
