A Svea 40 came my way, in great condition but for the primer cup. The central fixing lip was torn and there was a nick in the rim

If it were a less rare cup without the 'dimple' I'd have been tempted to replace it with a spare, but this type of cup isn't so easily come by, so I decided I'd best fix it.

First off, I cut a 'washer' shape out of brass sheet of about the same gauge as the primer cup. I left a strip of brass untrimmed to enable me to jiggle the component into place when silbrazing, then dressed the mating surfaces with a rotary file (Dremel)

This was where the piece to be grafted in was to be located, though I flipped the cup over to do the silbrazing, with the brazing rod applied from the underside of the cup

Here's the repaired cup before it was cleaned up. You'll see I've applied a blob of silbraze to the nick in the rim of the cup

Trimmed and polished, the repaired primer cup. Not perfect, but sound now, and matching the character (the odd dent and abrasion) and patina of a true classic ...

Nice work, John. (And a nice stove).

The pressure valve is pointing in an unusual direction. Is this the original setup or was it rotated when the filler tube was re-soldered?

What is the dimple for? Is it a reserve for lighting the main jet once the preheating is completed?

No, the filler tube's not been re-soldered, Yonadav, it's a characteristic of this type of stove.

I've two of these now, in the way that collections expand unintentionally sometimes and you'll see they share that feature, along with the tank wall mounted ('external') non-return valve. The other stove's lacking the original primer cup and both have acquired a Primus roarer burner replacement at some time

Yep. It gives you some valuable seconds to start to pump when you see that the main area of the cup has run out of it's meths.
There are variants of this from many manufacturers.

Exactly so, Dave. Probably of less use with a roarer burner than a silent type, which can easily flick into underburn I've noticed if the paraffin's pressurised before the primer fuel's used up. With just that little dimple of residue primer fuel burning, a silent burner seems a bit less inclined to do that than if the whole annulus of the cup's ablaze.

The 'dimple' works a treat on this Svea 130 with a silent burner

John, nice work. Both of your stoves are very nice. There are very few stoves that beat the engraving on the old SVEAs.

Nice job John! One of my favorites for stoves (I don't have one yet but I love the engraving).

Looks like a pretty good size dimple too.

Hi John a brilliant fettle on the spirit cup and i agree with your desision repairing the spirit on such a rare part it would have been a real shame if the spirit cup was replaced with a standard cup on such a beautifull old classic the engraving on it is fantastic and so is the patina in fact i am going to adopt that idea leaving the natural patina on a stove as i have all ways polished them to a shine once again John well done there on another of your superb restorations

Cheers Brian, fellas. Interesting point you make about patina on stoves, Brian. I guess it's a personal preference ultimately and I'll confess that I've got to admit sometimes that a stove's beyond redemption when it comes to preserving the finish ... you know the sort I mean where the brass is so stained that it won't improve with a waxing but remains dull and grubby. With one like that I'd probably try for a shiny look because it's all or nothing then.

Otherwise, for me it's like wanting a 'fresh from the quarry' look for the stones of Stonehenge and giving them a sandblasting!
