Had to have it but not sure what I'll ever use it for. Definitely not taking this one backpacking unless I can get a volunteer to pack it. Any volunteer's??? lol After a quick go over tried to light it without a flame spreader. That was missing.That was a no go. Between John and I we both sort of arrived at the same conclusion that it needed that "covered up space" to become a combustible mixture of air and fuel. I am thinking a trip to a muffler shop and they should be able to expand a 3" piece of tubing sufficiently to make a decent facsimile flame spreader. But in the meantime a piece of thicker not sure how thick brass shim stock made for a temporary flame spreader. I know it should be flared out but it's hard not to want to light these things. When I get a better example of a flame spreader I'm sure it will burn better. As it was I let it go for a good 10 minutes and all seemed fine. It lit up straight off after the preheat so that was that. Going to make up a pot stand like the original that came with these stoves. John is going to measure his up for me so I should be able to make that. Thank you for that John!!!!That would kind of make it more functional. I've already got a nice old cast iron kettle. It will look good. The code on the bottom is Y9. I gather 1934? If so that makes it my oldest stove.

Hi @MrAlexxx , it is unusual to see a pump spring installed outside the pump tube. You generally find them inside the pump tube, and working in the opposite sense. Meaning the the pump is limited on the extent of the back stroke, not retarding the forward stroke as your stove pump is. Just an observation. Best Regards, Kerophile.

@MrAlexxx Having a spring on the outside like that will hide the initial signs of the NRV starting to leak. Any slight pushing back by the air / fuel coming back out of the fount won't show up because the rod is already being pushed by the spring. Not saying that your NRV is leaking it's just another consideration of why you should move the spring. It looks to be working very nicely with the makeshift flame spreader. You can even see the "shadow" in the red glow where the burner tubes are "protecting" the spreader from the flames. Regards John
@Jeopardy Thanks for the tip. I was contemplating pulling the NRV but seemed to be okay. I'll keep an eye on it. Okay fellow stovies...was going to go to the muffler shop today and get a piece of 3" tubing and see if the shop boys could expand the end a bit to make a better flame ring. Thought I'd better do one more look around the yard to see if I had anything that I might be able to work into a decent flame spreader. I spent a good portion of my work life on shift as part of the skeleton crew in the maintenance end of a large factory type operation. So I consider myself somewhat of an improv artist. Try to make something out of nothing and always trying to make something work for which it was not intended. If you know anything about maintenance on shift in a factory operation you'll know that you'll do nearly anything to keep the wheels turning till the larger day crew comes in. I've seen some fixes that would make you shiver...of course I'd never admit to being a part of them. lol So...looking around the yard spied this old artillery casing that I have no idea where it came from or even how long I have had it. A long time for sure it's been sitting on my deck. From a distance I thought that looks awfully close to 3" and it even has the built in flair already. Could I be that lucky? Picked it up and looked at the bottom...3" 50 CAL MK9...took it to the shop and the end slid perfectly into the flame spread holder on the burner. Got out the ZIP disc and sliced off the end that I needed. Shell casing back onto the deck...nobody is going to know that 2" is missing. A half an hour with a file and this is what I came up with. I think it looks good and I left a little "meat" in length on it in case I want to doctor it up a little more. I'll fire the stove tomorrow and see if this works better. It's steel it should hold up for a long time I hope.
Nicely done indeed. People often surprise me with their ingenuity. You're not only ingenious but lucky as well. I mean what's the chance of finding a 50 CAL MK9 artillery casing laying around the house when you need one? Ben

@Mr Shagratork Ahhhhhhhh...it's a thing called a girl. MEOW!!!! Being single sometimes between stoves I enjoy the company of a female. Oh just some silly picture I found on the internet to dress up my work space. Sometimes when things aren't going quite right out in the shop it's nice to get lost someplace else. I'm sure you know what I mean. *winkwink* After I posted that flame spreader pic I thought...ohhh...I didn't see that sneak into the background. I wonder if anyone else will? You have a sharp eye...I will remember that. It's G-rated and only your imagination can take you elsewhere. lol
