I was hoping people would forget about flame shots but I gather that's not likely to happen with all you pyromaniac's around...me included...lol... Okay...went and gave it a few tries...There is an issue with leakage around the jet. You can see kerosene mist going in two directions...one larger stream straight up as it should and another smaller stream of mist going sideways...looks to be from the base of the jet...not as it should. I tightened the jet down about as hard as I would dare and it will not stay lit if I remove the lighter. If the smaller mist ignites it keeps the larger mist burning but...that's not right. Now as I see it...either the jet threads are worn out or the burner threads are worn or maybe a little of both. I'm not liking this turn of events. Boo! I figure finding a new burner is about as likely as getting hit by lightning and finding a new jet only slightly better odds. It would sure be nice to have a spare jet to try. I guess I could try some kind of thread sealer...Locktite or some kind of sealing tape but I'm doubtful they would hold up long in the heat. Or as a last resort silver solder the jet in?? Don't really want to have to resort to that. Any idea's stovies? On the upside I still think the flame spreader is fantastic but I can't totally verify that.
@MrAlexxx Brazing is a last resort, but not terminal. The part you want is jet No. 4747 or 4747(B). Send an email to The Base Camp and see if they have one or similar - or maybe there is a Fogas equivalent???? Cheers Tony
@Tony Thanks...I'm on it. I tried Basecamp for the flame spreader but never got an email back one way or the other...hence the reason I made that. Hope they have a jet.
@MrAlexxx The Base Camp is a small (but very good) outfit. If you don't get a response to an email after a few days, resend. Fogas might also be worth a try. Tony
@MrAlexxx Sorry to hear of the problem with the jet, or maybe jet mounting boss threads, or both as you say. Not obvious from inspecting the components evidently. I've had more success placing an order with Base Camp over the phone and would be happy to contact them on your behalf. I make a lot of use of my Primus 85 - wok cookery and searing meat - and a spare jet wouldn't be a bad idea, so I'd order one myself. John
Sealing threads subject to heat .... Try p.t.f.e tape or a milk of magnesia paste. Both non permanent and easily removed . Nick
Thanks Nick...I'll try that. Okay got my steel for the pot stand. This is what he gave me after I gave him the metric measurements. Base plate seems kind of thick but it'll be okay. Hopefully this pile should turn into something looking like a pot stand. I'll keep you posted.
Okay with the help from John (presscall) who so graciously provided the measurements from his original Primus 85 pot stand I attempted to duplicate the pot stand. I'm no fabricator or welder but I think I know enough to make myself dangerous. I'm never really happy with much that I do but for what it is I think it looks okay and should serve it's purpose well. Do I have to put that dirty old stove on it now?? lol
It's outstanding in fact. Alex kindly sent me pics of the outcome in a 'conversation' and my eyes popped out of my head at the result. Those are hefty steel sections that can't be crafted into curves like that without real skill and a jig or two. Brilliant job! John
Thanks guys. I'll post a couple "jig" pics when I get the time. I do have an oxy/propane tank setup so that really helps in bending the steel.
FINALLY!!! The jets have arrived. By AIR MAIL Royal Mail it says. Was beginning to wonder if the Royal Mail was still using the venerable Sopwith Camel as the mainstay of it's mail delivery service. lol Tomorrow will be the moment of truth. Stay tuned... And a great BIG thank you to you John.
Did I really say I was going to wait till tomorrow? Silly me... I tried...really I did...but couldn't resist the temptation to go give the new jet a try. Made all the difference...lit right up after the preheat. I think I might shave a little off of the bottom of the homemade artillery shell flame spreader. It might be a tad high but actually looks and seems to serve as intended. All I can say boys is if you have a hankering for a big stove with a real BIG roar to it find yourself an 85. It REALLY is quite impressive. That is some serious fire power. I like it and it passed with flying colors the boil the tea kettle test in record time. Now the next dilemma...to polish up the stove or not? Hmmmm.... And...once again thanks John.
@MrAlexxx I'm just catching up on posts unread while I've been away at the CCS gathering at Newark and was glad to read that you've got a great result and glad I could help out. I know you weren't sure whether it was the threads on the old jet or the female threads on the jet boss that were worn out. Good it was the old jet's. Yes, they're quite something on full song - bass bellow rather than the tenor shriek of a bottle stove roarer burner I think. Incidentally, a wok sits on that stand like it was made for one and the combination is the one I use for stir fries. John
