Ummm am I missing something on this post????
I've got a stainless steel toaster which fits directly over the stove, gets red hot and toasts bread by the radiated heat from the plate.
It is made from stainless steel, it's attracted to a magnet so will be a ferritic alloy, most likely 430 (cheapest available)
Properties for 430 is melting point 1425 to 1510 degrees C. In old money 2597 to 2750 F.
No melting problems. I've got a picture of the device but not real time working. Will post this weekend.

Your not missing anything, except weight and marketing. Mostly marketing. Stainless steel is heavy and a poor heat conductor compared to aluminum. Titanium is light and a poor conductor compared to aluminum.

Not surprised at the cold canister. The hottest part of the stove is much closer to the canister than the pot. And the design pretty much eliminates conductive and radiated thermal feedback. The designers did solid work in that aspect.

Doc, I'm shocked, disappointed and appalled that you left a stove burning unattended in a tent. Shame on you. LOL!

Your experience will likely save many others from the same fate. That's leading from the front. Great "research" there. Really hands on, real world stuff.

Lots of good stuff here. Great thread.

BTW, Is it just me, or is Doc developing a hobby out of getting hot stoves airborne? One by foot and now this one by hand. Are there other "research" projects we don't know about? HA!

    Evening, Friends,

Yep, Ol' Doc dodged a huge bullet during that incident, and he knows it, and is massively thankful for that blessing!! [-o< [-o< In that tent was a huge part of my Living History kit: flintlock long gun and pistol, more than several pounds of blackpowder, a few stove fuel canisters, and our custom-made, leather-covered wooden trunks, filled with my 18th century clothing, and many, many other things. Had that tent gone up, I shudder to think of the damage that blackpowder, and various incendiaries, would have caused to life and limb, not only of me, but of many innocent attendees! As this was an event which I helped found, 8 years ago, I would never have been able to make it up to anyone who was hurt, or God forbid, killed!! SO, word to the wise: Safety!! Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc
P.S. Mike, how in hell did you remember that story about kicking a field goal with that Coleman 550???!!!
