These look like they would work if the proper size/ dimensions to support the larger 2 pint camping stoves. There are no measurements identified though. They are "army issue number 12 cooker / stove billy tins", aluminum square, with bottom and top lid, clip lock with strap. Going to email the seller for future reference. Unfortunately the price of shipping and what the seller is asking for is too high for me, regardless of whether they fit or not.
that's 8 1/2" square. sorry i can't find the deeper half but IIRC 3" or 4" deep. made of stout stainless.
Hi Tetley - they are Stainless? Even better then. I heard back from the seller, they are 9" x 9" x 5", 4 of them, each the same size, each have handles. All have straps designed to strap them to a number 12 / 2 or / 5 army cooker / stove. That size would easily fit (with room to spare) those 2 pint camping stoves (Svea 105, Optimus 45, Primus 54, etc), including their pan rings.

Thanks Tetley - I took the plunge and the owner was willing to sell 1, so I purchased a set. Being sent to my nephew in London (works there), who will return with it in a month's time. He has a number of other stoves waiting to bring back with him, so this will protect a few of them quite well.
The earlier ones were mild steel, the later ones stainless. Mild ones rust if you don't condition them, stainless ones warp like hell, especially the frying pan/lid Go for stainless, love them, can keep stove/fuel/mug/equipment all in the one tough box, plus it can be secured easily by a belt..... Thanks Alec - I won't be using them for cookpots, strictly as a travel/storage case. I'm hoping these are the later stainless version but regardless I feel they will perform well. With these now I will have a template to look for others closer to home. They are larger than the Optimus 45 case, so they will fit equivalent-sized (+ slightly larger) stoves in addition to other items. They will also fit inside the back hatch of the kayak and sit flat along the mid-section's bottom.
Found these at a Thrift store, Wear Ever aluminum nesting pots. Only $2.00 Cdn (haggled down from $4) they will work well as a stove case for Primus 96-sized tanks and smaller (1/2 pint). Leaving their pretty but weak 'L's (tins) at home (too rough for the little guys). Measuring 7" x 5" z 2.5" (18 x 13 x 6 cm). They are roughly 1/2 the size of a Peak 1's case. Both 1/2 halves come with a wire, fold-back handle. Items each protected inside fabric sleeves (tank, draughtshield, prickers, spanner, pot supports, vapo tube, burner bell, burner plate). One could cut the wire to save weight but they may come in handy and don't interfere with anything (personally I don't use them for cooking). Pretty sure there's a US equivalent to these as well (and most likely other countries). Case inside her cozy (mid-weight nylon sleeve). Hoping to find something for the 1/2 to 1 pint sized camping stoves (which don't fit inside Peak 1 case). The 1 1/2 - 2 pinters will fit inside the nesting pan set for the army issue number 12 billy tin set.

Great, thanks Tetley and buzz. My nephew has the cooker tin, he'll return it with him by Christmas (he's in London). The 45 is the same size as so many other (1.75 pint) discus-shaped camping stoves, looks like there's ample room for it + other gear (as expected). Nice Svea stove too. I'll add the BAT case to the mix - some pressed, rigid laminated fiber, riveted seams for strength and ample room for a 2 pint camping stove + some gear. It measures 9 3/4" x 5 1/2" x 11" or 25 cm x 14 cm x 28 cm (w x h x l). Edit: Are those cylinder cases aluminum? Their tops just pop on? Nice find.
Yep, aluminum. The nobs or handles are gone. No problem as I can make some nice nobs from walnut on the lathe. I think these would be good for stoves even with reserve caps as the can , can hold some gear stored under the stove, or on top. Thinking about making wire bails for them also. Need some way to secure the lids as they simply pop off. Any ideas welcome. Been looking all over for square tins, not any luck yet. Buzz
You could put the aluminum cylinders/stove case inside a sized to fit stretchy nylon sleeve (that covers the entire case). The proper sized sleeve will keep pressure on the lid. Stuff sack and cotton sleeves are too lose, it should be stretchy and form over the case and both ends. THe sleeve can also help add a layer of protection around the metal, reducing scratches on its surface and conversely the metal of the case impacting other objects its packed with. Sleeve or pant leg cut from an old, outgrown or lived-in middle-weight polyster/spandex piece of clothing should do.
Container ideas for Coleman 550: The topic is tough stove cases and the Peak 1 cook kit is tough and a tight fit for the 550, the kit’s square corners accomodates the protruding pump & cap. That’s as good as it gets but to “get” a kit may not be easy. I don’t have another “tough” case but I do want containers for stoves. The 550 is round but has a bump on each side (pump & fuel cap) because of this, a round container to just slide it into would be quite a bit larger than the 550 and not a tight fit. I have a suggestion for that below. My intension was to contain several 550’s and share a solution that could be used w/any 550 BUT this sample doesn’t work for all 550 models. I fell short of my objective for now BUT it’s a different solution someone may find useful. Start w/ a fairly common tin 5 1/8” diameter round 5 ¾” tall. As shown in pic with a little pressure applied it can be egg-shaped and a 550 can start to slide down inside. With a correctly placed hole (w/material protecting the cap) the 550 goes all-in, the tin springs back to it’s round shape, ya slap it’s lid on, tight fit and you’re done. The only part sticking out is a robust cap covered w/material (leather?). The tin shown is a 12 oz popcorn tin from a Boy Scout fund raiser and works for 550’s that don’t have the plastic pump (which sticks out farther). 2 improvements I may still be able to do: 1. use alum pot/pan as a lid. 2. on my 1st rendition it’s a hole to accommodate the cap. This can be achieved other ways ie bulge(s) banged-outward, vertical slot(s) etc. The crux is squeeze the egg shape to get the stove in, which allows for a smaller case w/tighter fit, undt datz it merry christmas
the American won't work for storing anything.oval in shape with one half having a divider down the middle.i have cook kits from several Armys and the US ones are the only made like that.
Here’s 1 more Red Green tip for make-do Stove Tins. Same exact size as 550 tin above, 5 1/8” diameter. The stoves we’ll put in are taller than the tin so if you can bulge out the bottom a smidge, good, put the stove in, the lid will just barely cover it, strap lid down w/duct tape, done. In a pinch, stoves that would go in there: 400, 400A, 400B and 442. It's not so much a recomendation, it's something if u have nothing. Finding tough lightweight cases this size taint been easy. I can make-do w/these til somethin better comes along. cheers
You might try the plastic pails from cat-litter. Come in 7Kgm/14Kgm sizes with tight snap-on lids, carry handles. Seem quite durable - am using a couple for assorted camping gear.
