What is "Ignore"?

I see on a members profile a 'link' called "IGNORE".
What does that do? Just stop any notifications/alerts of posts by that member?

Can it make the posts by those members 'Not Visible" to me???

At the risk of the possible chance that this is TMI (Too Much Information):
There are some people I really would like to not be bothered with knowing that they have written more of their pointless or angry posts. But, simply not getting notification is obviously only one task in my list of tasks to not have to read what they write.

I, no doubt, have been 'Ignored' by some.

Easy enough to test but yes, that's what it does. Their posts become invisible to you. You won't see threads started by them or replies they make in others threads. Can make threads hard to follow that they are active in. I've not used it here but on forums where I have it's more bother than it's worth.

It would be useful for ignoring notifications, I can think of a couple of cases but to make their contribution invisible would indeed be an anoyance.

Is it a one-way process? Can folk be un-ignored? I may have a play with it.....

You can alter your notifications settings via 'Alert Preferences' from the options drop-down available by clicking your user name up top right of page.

Ignore can be reversed.

 

Having the "ignore" option makes banning unnecessary.

Those offended by a poster can avoid further aggravation by "ignoring" them while those who are not offended remain unaffected. It is rare that someone has absolutely nothing to contribute and/or rubs everyone the wrong way.

It turned John "invisible" completely, I found him again via a previous PT in my Inbox to "un-ignore" him.

Fun to try but could turn threads into chaos!

The ignore feature's there for members to use if they wish. It does not & will not replace a site ban. I don't understand the logic that would consider it a suitable alternative. While I can appreciate your tenacity I'm not going to get drawn any further on your agenda.

You can manage your ignores via the options under your username. It does cause some threads to appear totally disjointed which is why I don't use it elsewhere. Of course it would not be wise as admin for me to use it here.

 

I can see that it works very well for what it is. And now I see that it could make topic flow un-readable. I guess it is easier to just not read those posts.

Hijacked threads are difficult, too.

 

One place ignore can work very well is in the case of a bulk forum spammer. Even the best mods take a while to get rid of these cretins and in the meantime they flood the place with whatever. Ignore makes them go away until they are delt with properly.
This happened recently on another forum. 200 threads opened in 10 minutes. Hit ignore after the 3rd and they all disapeared. Emailed the only mod on the forum who was asleep at the time and delt with it in the morning.
Most times though its not that useful

 

That others read my posts and don't understand is a constant source of irritation. It would be less frustrating if they understood and simply disagreed.

You have brought that other point up at other times also.
