I still go with the Trangia, this is a 25 clone
    th_trangia2.jpg
works just as well as a Trangia costing over twice as much

NOW, you can put up your tent, then have a brew, while your mate is still pissing about with an MSR or Primus stove, plus the pots and pans.

All you need in one pack, will never fail you so long as you have fuel. Don't get me wrong, it lacks the firepower of other liquid and gas stoves, but they just keep on working with no maintenance :D :D :D

    Trangia.

For white gas stoves, I've always found the Svea 123 easier to use then the Optimus 8R, but that could be a personal thing. (I almost always use it with the Sigg cookset.) The Coleman model 400 is also easy, but it does involve pumping.

No one has yet mentioned the SnowPeak Gigapower WG. I don't think it's the easiest stove to use, because of set-up and pumping but, as its maker claims, it doesn't need priming. Once pumped up, just open the valve and light -- no flare ups, just instant cooking flame. (Admittedly, I've only used it a couple of times, and in "smiling" conditions, at that.)

I would agree, Doc, that no paraffin-burning stove could be called "convenient", nor is that the attraction of using them.

The best designed stove is Optimus No 9 but the most functionel and designed stove I like the most is Radius No 21 or Primus No 71. They both give enough with heat and always works perfect! And Radius No 21 is just a little bit better since tou can use the stove as a lamp aswell, wich is great! It is 3 versions of thease kind of lamps:
Radius No 143, Radius No 145 and Radius No 145
Radius No 143 is it called if the lamp is fitted on a Radius No 21 stove
Radius No 145 is it called if the lamp is fitted on a Radius No 17 stove and Radius No 146 is it called if it's fitted on a Radius No 21 stove but instead of cylindric glass it is a round globe

Magnus, no, no, no, read the question again, it is not a matter of esthetics, just how easy they are to set up and use ;)

OK since I am positively NOT a stove collector (despite having accumulated - God alone only knows how  - about 25 stoves), I'd say my favourite stove is the last one I got... \:D/

So that makes it the 1954 Bialaddin M1950 GI Coleman 536 whatever it is thingy. However, this seems to have two only states - 'off' and 'global thermonuclear warfare' :-k

So maybe it's the one before that - the British Army Mk 3! Slight problem there with portability. :-k

OK then, then one before that! So it's the 111B for me! Supplied by Henry, fettled by Ian, works a treat, I love it!

    Trangia 27 "custom" on ethanol.

I like my MSR GK & my Optimus 88 (123 with pan set - think small Sigg Tourist) but for a weekend in the hills the Trangia wins everytime. In perfect weather it's fast enough - in foul weather its the 100% total never let you down, won't blow out, won't breakdown stove. I've told the stories of my Trangia outpacing the modern 'expedition' stoves in wild weather too many time to do it again. But.... Brews before the other have primed! I'll just lie here & relax & wait for my water to boil while you huddle over your stove to try & shield it from the breeze & get it primed! Tell you what - don't get stressed I'll boil another kettle for you on my stove! Yes - thats right - it is wild & it's burning even fiercer! Watch out mate! Is that your windshield blowing down the mountainside!

Was that you in the movie, or were you behind the camera ? Whoever said "job done" sounds just like Chris Boardman ;)

I think I will have to get a more rural location sorted for photographing stoves etc. Yours looks like a large planter delicately covered in ivy whereas I take photos on the bird table delicately covered in bird shit !

    Cheers

Actually I like the small stoves the most! I got 8 st Primus No 71... Why - Becouse they're the "best".

*Sievert Campus No 3 is also a great stove, easy to pack up and light up same as the small stove!

    Optimus? yes, but, my vote goes to the 111b. My average morning while camping was like this;
Wake up, roll over and then a smoke. Give the 111B 3 pumps, turn the regulator for the count of 3, shut again, light and reopen the valve after 45 to 60 seconds.
This incedently is just enough time to prep the first cuppa. :)-
I've never had a stove that didn't weigh a buggering ton that cld do the same. Even new Colemans have a longer warm up period.

Meva 2140, which is very similar to the Svea 123, or the 8r like most here seem too; my sturdy frame is not averse to carrying what may seem like a heavy case  No matter what, there is some degree of priming, whether it be by pump or "spilt" fuel... I am puzzled as to why someone has not mentioned the Turme Tourist??? I do not have one, so am not familiar with its operation. My opinion on this stove is grounded on photos(yeah really shallow, I know..) Anyone vouche for this observation??

Simplicity is going either to my 8R, 123, or my 520/530. Due consideration is given to climate, # in party and weight. I love the regards that some of our comrades have for their respective alcohol stoves. Myself, the only alcohol going with me is the consumable type. In my spirit tin equipped with it own brass straw. The only benefit that I have come to enjoy with my spirit stoves is that I can cook in my tent with them and I must admit that has a place, while I don't recommend it, I do it often. Makes a nice little heater to take the chill off too just before bed. My Primus 41 is also a favorite and I find it hard to believe no other have mentioned it. The only draw backs to paraffin for me whilst packing is the smell and sometime spill. I would much rather carry WG/Panel wipe. Self drying and leaves almost no trace. Almost forgot CHEAPPPPP, and easy to use even when it is subzero.

The "best" - that would be Optimus, surely!

No - the Trangia is the best & you only need one.

If they passed a law that said you could only have one stove all the others, rare or not, would go & I'd keep the Trangia. (actually Id probably ignore the law but if I got caught.....it's too early in the morning....I've actually caught myself thinking where I'd hide them! - I need cafffiene)

    Hey, Brother Spudz,

I was "wondering" why you were up so early! Heck, out here, it's way past my bedtime, and I'm only marking time until Sweet Bride calls, from up in the Great White North, to tell me she's safely home and locked in for the night!! Have a fine day, and I hope the coffee does the trick, for you AND Ross!!! ;) :D  Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc Mark

I no longer use "alchies" cuz of limited temp control (in most of them) as well as they tend to be THIRSTY( funny thing about alchoho :)) and w/ the Trangia/SveaNC76/Optimus 88 types, if it's cold out side, so are you and your food. Spirits don't wanna work right when it's cold out side. Ild go back to white gas first, at least the stoves that use it(8R, 111B, 123, etc.) work no matter the out side temp. Alchies just can't say that.
