I hadn't noticed the price, but even if the multiple isn't that much, £45 in 1951 Australia was a lot of money. I'll see if I can find something to compare it with.

The average weekly wage for Australian men in 1951 was around £10 per week. The "Basic Wage" set by the Federal system was about £9/7/-.

 

Australian average weekly standard earnings in November 2014 were $1476.

 

As late was the early 1970s in the US, when I was in law school, gasoline was 25 cents per gallon, and bread would be on sale for 15 cents per loaf, milk sometimes as low as 25 cents per gallon.

We had three kids and lived on $325 per month, including our rent, which was $100 per month for a small two-bedroom house.

Things have changed.
