Prentiss Wabers

I have a Prentiss Wabers model #5. Anybody know what year it was made?

 

Hi, newlondon695. I see this is your first post; welcome.

I know very little about the Prentiss Wabers but check out the gallery under US made stoves and if you could post some pictures of the stove burner and preheater cup if it has one. It would be very helpful when a more learned member comes along to get an idea of the date when your stove was built.

I have adverts for Prentiss Wabers Nos. 8 and 10 from 1929.
I also have an advert from 1921 where the stoves are not numbered at all.

So I presume that your No.5 is from the mid 1920s.

Your No. 5 is unusual. It looks like it has a No. 4 burner and tank.

Here is one example No. 4 that has the long generator that curls over the burner and under:

Auto Cook Kit No. 4

I thought these were only typical to the No. 4, but I see that your No. 5 has the same design. It must have been a transitional period since my No. 5 has the straight generator. It could have been leftovers from the No. 4 manufacture that were installed in the No. 5, who knows???

Great that you got some bigger photos to post! I have a PW #4, like Sam's, but my spelling is like your #5 "Auto Kamp Kook Kit". This was done as a form of alliteration, and, I think, because it looks "catchy" do spell things that way. My #4 has the extra long generator, which wraps around the second burner, just as yours and Sam's do.

I note your fuel cap looks oddly different to mine, and to any other I've yet seen. Is there a stump of hose affixes to the air intake part at on top of your fuel cap? If you have some sharper photos of that fuel cap, outside and inside, that would be good to see.

I believe that may have been a product infringement between Prentiss Wabers and American Gas Machines. I don't know if there was an agreement or, for that matter, a disagreement, between the two companies or not, but at some point, AGM took over or continued with the 'Kamp Kook' in the name of the stove and PW went with Auto Cook Kit some time in 1922 to 1924.

Most likely would be 1920 to 1922-ish is my guesstimate before the change in the name of the kit, anyway.

The top piece of your fuel cap looks like it could have had a hose attachment that was ultimately attached to a pump. These were not rare and came as an accessory to pressurizing the fuel tank. See the post at the link below near the bottom. There are pictures of two different pumps that yours could have come with:

Otherwise, the rest of the fuel cap looks original and normal. There should be a small steel or brass ball inside of your fuel cap moving freely around inside. It holds pressure when the tank is filled and will push the ball up holding the air in. If it is in any way dirty, it will not hold air. Clean with carburetor cleaner and it will work once again.
