Hi All, I got my first Optimus 22 yesterday, a belated Christmas present to myself that had been caught up in the mail. After a bit of a cleanup it fired up ok. But it seems to be burning rich. There is yellow in the flame at full, and almost all yellow at simmer. So out came the jets - they seem to be a fit for a 0.32 pricker. Is this the right size for a 22? I fired it up on kero because that's what was in the tank. Is there a possibility that it's a coleman fuel burner? Any thoughts as to the problem? Cheers Colin
Hello Colin. That jet size is correct for a kerosene model. There could be fuel residue inside the burners that needs cleaning out or the burners may need to be decarbonised. Try 1/2 filling the fuel tank with meths and pump some through to the burners until it comes through the jets, then close off the burners and leave for a few days with the meths still inside. Hopefully that should dissolve any residues. Next pump the meths through again while manipulating the auto prickers to clear the system and the jets. Then empty the meths from the fuel tank and make sure all of the meths has been cleared from the fuel system by pumping air through the system with an empty fuel tank. Allow for all the meths to fully evapourate from the fuel tank and the burners before putting in some clean kerosene to try out your stove. Providing the jets aren't worn, it may take a little time for the flames to settle and burn blue again. Cheers, John
Hi John, Thanks for that, I'll look into some cleaning. The jets may be getting oversize. One burner was worse that the other so I swapped the jets over and the other one is now worse. I'd peen them closed but I don't have spares if anything were to go wrong. Cheers Colin
What type of burners does it have ? There are three types of 22's Kero burner has 4 tubes Petrol has two Alcohol, I'm not sure, never seen one The alky burner will have a much larger jet. All yellow does sound a bit rich. Congrats on getting one of the Grand Prizes of the Stovie world, By the Way!
Alcohol 22 - single tube. There's one in the gallery: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/13329 sam
4 Tubes, good to know I'm feeding it the right stuff. Boiled some water with no soot on the billy, at least not at full noise. The right one shows some yellow here on full. Hard to get a photo that shows it. Simmer, or am I just asking too much of it? I guess I'm in the market for a pair of jets. Cheers Colin
I picked up an old 22 recently too, it burns with some yellow. I have not had a chance to fiddle with it. One burner was cocked a little so I had to loosen it and move it, it needs more adjustment, I'm suspicious that maybe the burners had been taken off of another stove as I can't see them having moved on their own. I could not tell if they were connected properly as I had the whole thing out of the case, so it was hard to judge how to set them up. I can use my "B" to use as the example. Both are older ones as they have the rails for the pot supports. Duane
First roar burners do not burn well on low simmer, the vaporizor does not stay hot enough. Your asking to much. If you need that low a flame, you have to us a flame tamer and a higher flame. Second I see nothing wrong with the first flame shot that a pan over the flame will not fix. It's only to rich if the pan soots up.
Yeah, I thought I might be asking too much. The only other regulated roarer I have to compare is a Campingo that burns coleman, it manages to stay blue right down low. Having said that though, the simmer shot is roaring and it does have a blue flame underneath, not just a candle - and the other side burner is better. Mid throttle there is still a fair bit of yellow so I think the jets are a bit worn but not too bad. Cheers Colin
Hello Colin. A nice example of an embossed Optimus 22 and possibly one of the last embossed ones - looking at the pot supports. Your jets appear worn but one more than the other. I will send you a PM. John
A big Thank You to John for digging into his spares for a pair of new jets It now works like new, this being about the same low simmer as the photo above. I must say it's fast becoming the favorite, having already cooked some meals on it. A really sweet stove. Cheers Colin
Hello Colin and it is nice to see your stove burning well again. I have found the 22's to be a very reliable camp stove and very capable of cooking gently if needed. That's using a heavy copper bottomed pan. Those burner shrouds help it keep the heat where it is needed for preheating and efficient vapourisation of the fuel as well as protecting the burners from wind draughts. A very good design indeed. Cheers, John
