Hi All Shes a burner but in a bad way! After fitting the new service kit from Ross pressure seems good no leaks gauze inserted etc. Tried to use the double preheat method described in a previous post regarding a No96 just a jet of neat paraffin out of the burner, loads of orange flames black smoke etc. The pricker seems to be a pretty loose fit in the burner orifice does this mean the jet is knackered? some advice would be appreciated Thanks Nick.
Affraid so, the pricker should be a 'sliding fit'! Also, the pricker for the #96 is .23millimeters, the one for larger stoves is .32mm. There is a tutorial in the masters class that shows you how to 'restore' the lipstick burner jet to its original diameter. Haven't tried it myself as yet. Best regards, Wim
Thanks Wim I am going to head for that topic now. Sounds like I will have to get a new burner next, any ideas where to get one ? Cheers Nick
I have no idea if new lipsticks are still available (maybe Basecamp?). I got 3 'used but in good condition' ones on ebay some months ago. But some of the other members have done some great work on resurrecting these, maybe they'll come to the rescue soon. Regards, Wim
Wim Have you got any Idea how far into the burner tube the gauze should go maybe I did not have it pushed far enough? I have just tried the jet hole with a high E guitar string which is apparently the right size I.E 9 thou or .23mm and it is still a bit loose But I suppose .1 mm all round is a huge area increase in proportion. Cheers Nic
Hi Nic, I push the gauze in as far as possible, after rolling it up fairly tight. But from what you've said, I think the main problem is the enlarged jet (well, not really a 'proper' jet as we see on other stoves, but you know what I'm getting at! ). As I said before, I haven't tried this yet, but I had the idea to peen the top of the burner, with a piece of guitar string in the hole. This way one can not 'overpeen' I guess . Maybe someone else has tried this? Regards, Wim
Hi nmp even though you primed it twice was it shieldied from wind also with the lip stick type burner unlike the standard tube burner the fuel has not got so far to trvel before it comes out the jet as a gas thats what the gauze is for which you know it should be pumped slower than the standard burner until it has heated up another cause is the burner basket a nice snug fit so it can conduct heat to the tube once it is alight. If the cause of the problem is the jet orafice then it must be realy enlarged as an enlarged orafice will light with out liquid fuel comming out but will have a lot of yellow above the blue flame, a good way to check is to get a standard .32mm pricker and if it can go through the orafice then the orafice is too large
Mr Optimus (Brian) makes a very good point about the likelihood that an enlarged jet would result in a vapourised (blue) flame but with a lot of yellow in it, unless massively oversized, when it might just create the symptoms you've reported, nmp. I've a spare vapouriser tube from a 96 I'm happy to swap for your suspect one, which I'd likely restore with a jet 'insert' as featured here Lipstick burner re-jet PT me if you're interested. John
Thanks guys a PM is on the way to you John. Gonna see if the hole has been reamed out by use of the wrong pricker there were a couple in the tin. Wim I will also push the gauze further in. I did also tried preheating with gentle heat from a blow lamp [probably not rcommended!!!] but no improvement! cheers Nick
We did the lipstick burner swap and I confirmed the jet size on nmp's vapouriser was well oversize. It should have been 0.23 millimetres but a 0.32mm pricker was a sloppy fit in it (a 50% increase in the diameter). That equates to an oversize in jet orifice area of about 125%, so no surprise that the vapouriser wasn't vapourising properly and grossly overfueling. Re-jetting the vapouriser is here:- New jet for a 96 lipstick burner tube John
Hopefully you can see the results of your excellent work in my most recent post "she's a burner No96" Fantastic many many thanks for your generosity in a material way as well as spirit! Thanks John
