new member, what are all the bits for?

Newbie here!
Please can someone point me in the direction of a handbook page or something so that I can identify all the parts that are in the tin along with my Optimus no 00 stove. bought at an auction or antiques fair years ago but unused until the recent threats of blackouts.
It has detachable legs and a filler cap with no sail.
Bluey/green tin with stylised pic of the world with "Optimus" across it in a sort of sunburst effect.
Tin contains the tank with fold up legs and separate top "legs" to balance a kettle on. four "prickers" on a loop of wire and a fifth tiny one, a main jet with no dimple in the tray, a little tube with a clip and what i understand may be asbestos in a wider bit at one end, (:-0), a small spanner type thing with a universal joint in it and an oblong hole that must do something up and undo it, (What I don't know!), A cylindrical thing like a windshield maybe that fits over the burner with a keyhole shaped hole, a ring with a small hole in the centre that fits over the top of the burner has 4 tangs on the inner diameter, a circular cover with many holes in its side and another ring which has a vertical side that then becomes angled at about 45 degrees. When i first got it I soaked the leather in the pump for ages in oil and it works beautifully now, i.e. it pumps well, but i have yet to try and light it/use it.
My family had a Primus stove in a big tin box when i was a kid and I remember it being used.
So what is my main concern is the function of all the separate rings etc as they won't all go on at once as far as i can see.
i have three Tilley lamps so i understand and can work with the principal of pressurised paraffin going through a heated tube.
But I need a little confidence before having a go.
There is more stamped into the underside of the tank but I would have to clean it very thoroughly before I could read it.

Welcome to CCS! It sounds like you have all, or most, of the parts for your Optimus 00, with some other stuff chucked into the box, as well. Without actually seeing your parts, it's hard to be sure. But, it sounds like you might have a few Tilley parts mixed in with your stove parts. From your description, the little spanner with the universal joint on one end, sounds like it is to remove the jet, which is hard to do, without such an apparatus. It's a bit fiddly, but does work, once you get used to it.

It sounds like you also have a silent burner cap set, which does not go with your 00 stove. Any markings on the top of the cap with the holes in the side? If it's marked "Optimus", it may well be for an Optimus 48, which wound fit your mention of a Primus being used in the family, in years past, Or, it could be the Primus equivalent, which might be the Primus #5, or a similar stove.

You have identified the windscreen correctly. The rings that fit over the burner, are called the flame spreader. You only need one, so the others may be spares.

The 00 is an outstanding stove, and I have several of them, all of which work a treat! I'm sure yours will, too, once you give it a go. You may need to get a spanner like the one shown in this parts list, to tighten the burner down onto the fual tank, so it won't leak at that junction. Otherwise, sounds like you have a complete Optimus 00! Congratulations, and have fun with this wonderful stove! Take care, and God Bless!

thanks very much for your detailed answer. I didn't know how fast people would reply so I am very happy with the responses, two in what seems like just a few minutes! Wow!
Now that you have contacted me I will put pics up as it is obvious that there are some interesting points we can look at.
It is immediately obvious that it didn't come with two things, the spanner and the threaded cap for the tank.
The spanner matters not at all as I work on cars and 4x4s all the time, but the threaded cap/plug is a nuisance and I would like to find one if i can. Are these things threaded with a metric thread do you know and would it be a standard one? Because if so I could make one if necessary.

I will proceed eventually to put up some pictures as there are various differences and as I mentioned some parts which need to be identified.
I tried clicking on the link that you put up but it would not allow me to open it as I don't have permission.
Doubtless there are "terms of use" somewhere that I need to read!
Anyway, thanks again and i will be intouch again eventually!

PS should mention it is embossed with "optimus Sweden" on the top of the burner and what looks like Arabic going across it.
I paid £12.50 for it according to the sticker inside the lid, probably less as I doubtless did a little bargaining!

 

Welcome to CCS. If you are lucky the threaded cap for the tank may be found screwed onto the pump rod knob.

Very nice video. Thanks for posting it. Two suggestions, if I may? 1- it appears that you filled the 00 up with too much kerosene. I usually fill the tank only 2/3 full, to leave space for the air you're going to pump into the tank when using the stove. 2- As mentioned above, the travel cap is supposed to be mounted on the end of the pump rod, which offers a much better purchase when you pump up the tank pressure. Otherwise, a nicely done video. Great stove, too! The Optimus 00 was our first stove of it's kind, though we'd already been gifted a lovely Primus Pocket Outfit 96 from 1920. Two US Marine Brothers decided to give it to me, after I'd bought Coleman Stoves, and a SVEA 123. I took the little 96 home, oiled the pump leather, and primed it, and off it went, like a tiny rocket ship! Take care, and God Bless!

I have yet to purchase a Primus 96. I definitely need one in my life.

I just purchased the Willis marine stove yesterday, my first stove purchase since August of 20. Dang slacker here, haha...

@Stanleysteamer For those spannerless stoves, I tend to use an old English 4" adjustable girder spanner like an Abingdon/King Dick, Shelley or whatever. Many of the pressed spanners have opened up or otherwise ill fitting jaws, so a little adjustable with parallel jaws does the trick nicely. Ofttimes you don't need a spanner at all as there is no point in tightening it beyond an initial nip and I can sometimes get enough by hand.

 

Thanks for that @Dean ! I always have stuff like small adjustables in my tools. The two rear lockers in my Discovery 2 have a veritable garage-worths in there. So there is one in my tool roll that I go to first of all for anything. But I'll sort out a small spanner that fits and put it in the tin.
Now is there anywhere I can get a meths tin like wot should be in there? I am wondering if there is a "for sale " section on here.
One thing on this forum that throws me. There doesn't seem to be any facility to "like" someone's post. And although I have answered people's posts to me, the replies don't seem to tie in with their post, which is slightly annoying as I would like them to see my appreciation directly. Maybe I just need to address each person by name.
