@Ed Winskill That's awesome, thanks for posting that. @Tony Press I agree. If my 45 had a decently even looking patina, I would have left it. But the pitting will only get worse, and just plain ol' doesn't look good. I got her polished up about as good as it's gonna get. I'll more than likely just let it patina again.
Got my kit for this today, from the Fettle Box. Started working on it this evening. Everything has gone great thus far. Will start a new thread when I finish it up in the very near future. Have a question. I changed everything out in the kit so far, except for the asbestos free burner washers. Is this vital that I do this? I know asbestos is a bad thing. Also, there are two washers. Does one go above the spirit cup, and one below it, or is it just an extra? Thanks.
The burner washers are no need to change without you need to loosen the burner for another reason. The asbestos in the old washers is least dangerous sitting tight and most dangerous when disconnecting - you are strongly recommended to prevent dust by watering when handling any free asbestos as the danger is primarily inhalation. "Baked in" asbestos is quite harmless to handle but could produce dust by scratching, burning and other rough handling.
Thanks Lennart, appreciate it. I just found how to change in case it becomes necessary: Heat-resistant burner washers, and fitting them.
In line with Lennart. The 45 is "collapsible", if you break it down regularly those washers are key. That said, if you leave it together (like domestic) no "need" to change if there is no leak there. You asked question of the 2 washers... it's your turn to learn so you can burn baby burn.
Hi @The Warrior and @OMC, point of detail: If you “collapse” a stove like the Optimus No.45 for transport or storage the fuel tank is separated from the burner at the riser-to- tank joint. This joint uses a lead washer, which will last for a very long time if re- tightened carefully. Do not over-torque or you will extrude the lead out of the joint! The high temperature washers used on the riser-to-burner connection should never be disturbed when collapsing a “collapsible” stove, and should also last a long time if left undisturbed post- assembly. Got my new dremel type tool in today. Hope to finish this fettle and fire it up very soon. Have had this a month ago yesterday, and still haven't fired it up.
