Recently acquired Primus No. 3 with a silent burner... Knowing that a No.3 should be a Roarer & having a spare No.3 roarer burner, I thought I'd take it back to original... replace the silent with the roarer... BUT... the silent burner was not what i was expecting. Ermmmm its significantly larger than the 4142 silent I'm accustomed to... How much larger??? Judge for yourselves. The 'large' silent shares its nipple, 0.5mm(0.020 in) with the No.3 roarer burner (4131) I've fired it up & its big & blue & really produces those BTU (Kw if you prefer) Simple question - what have i got?? The crown of the outer cap is stamped:- Primus Metal Sweden & its diameter at base is 62 mm... The 4142 outer cap just making 52 mm. No other visible markings. I've looked through the catalogues & find nothing larger than the 4142 silent listed... This burner's a 4142 on steroids. Nick
One big arsed 'ol mother of a thing!!! Looks old by the condition of those feed tubes. Think you should call it " YesMam No Mam" just in case. Got a proper "copper" if you need a small pot to go with it.New an all. Barra
Hi Nick, I am really impressed with the size of this burner. I have never seen one like this in the flesh or the catalogues, although I always suspected that Primus must have made a silent burner bigger and more powerful than the 4kW produced by the #4142. Bruce and I corresponded on burner size some time ago: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/poor-mans-t-41.5694/#post-50974 I will need to look at pre-1957 Primus catalogues to see what the biggest silent burner listed is. You have produced some great photos and it would be nice to see the stove operating. Best Regards, Kerophile
Burning , For non broadband users .. its 10 seconds of low quality video of a silent burner .. For broadband viewers .. its exactly the same. From jet diameters of 0.32 & 0.5mm .. Area increase of x 2.4ish .. Guesstimating around 8 to 9 Kw output It dwarfs domestic pots & kettles Nick
Thanks for the non broadband video..but I need to update me veiwer now. One of thes days. My my it does seem hiddiously humungus...When you put it that perspective. Better get a trolley otherwise you'll do your back in.. Flare ups would be spactacular. Barra.
Hi Nick, great images. I really must get one! Re. the power ; Here is one I prepared earlier: I have made some estimates for stove powers, on the basis of published fuel consumption figures and a conservative estimate of 2kW for a Primus No. 2 stove. Here are my Estimates of maximum power for these stoves: Primus 96 = 0.93kW Primus 210 = 1.7kW Primus 1 and 5 = 2kW Primus 2 = 4.2kW Primus 3 = 9kW Primus 85 = 14.5kW Giant Monitor = > 20kW Please treat these as ball-park estimates since they rely on Manufacturer's figures for fuel consumption and I am often reminded that they lie. I recall that the jet size on this huge silent burner at 0.5 mm might be slightly smaller than the Jet size on a No3 stove roarer, but I am unsure without checking my notes. Best Regards, Kerophile Best Regards, Kerophile.
Just been looking at some info for another thread that linked here. Your burner is probably a 4147 - that was the burner for a No:7 & larger than the 4142 fitted to the No:8
